“Well, you are going to have your baby today!” Words I will never forget hearing. Words that are engrained in my brain. It was July 5th, 2015, and a day that changed my life forever.
I had missed all of the fun July 4th family festivities the day before, as I had not been feeling well. Throughout that evening and early morning, I could tell something was off. I spent the entire night getting up every few minutes and tossing and turning in my bed unable to get comfortable. Then, I started feeling a stabbing pain in my abdomen that gradually worsened every hour. This was a sign that every woman knows is not right during pregnancy… a sign that you need medical attention, and fast.
It was early in the morning, just after breakfast, before the sun began beating down as it does in the summer months. My husband and I decided we needed to go to the hospital. We jumped into the car and drove to the nearest emergency room, located about ten minutes from our home. After arriving at the hospital, we rushed into the emergency room and explained the situation to the nurse on duty. I was immediately greeted with a wheelchair and a doctor who began bombarding me with a million questions. “What is wrong?”. “What is your pain on a scale of 1-10?”. “Why did you not come in sooner?”. I was overwhelmed and emotional, to say the least.
I was placed directly into a private room and was given a hospital gown to change into. Then, a doctor came in and began examining me. It seemed like only moments later she looked me dead in the eye and confidently stated, “Well, you are going to have your baby today!”. This news was shocking to me as I was nearly two months away from my August 24th due date. Whether I was ready or not, I quickly had to begin the process of preparing myself to bring a new life into the world.
After a few hours in the hospital and a short fifteen minutes of active labor, I was officially a mother to a beautiful baby boy. As he was taken directly to the NICU (Neonatal Intensive Care Unit) because of his prematurity, I could only sit there full of anxiety and excitement, all while wondering what had just happened in the past 48 hours.
I was later informed by doctors that my placenta had erupted causing my preterm labor and explaining the severe pain. I was told both my son and I were lucky to be alive. My newborn remained in the NICU for two months until he was healthy enough to go home. My son, Travis is now a beautiful, healthy, seven-year-old boy. This was a traumatic experience, but one that bonded us forever.
