A Poetic Sojourn
By
Donald Harry Roberts
The mound that tops the height of the hill in my back yard
Rises in a natural observatory that scapes the land, the forests
The skies and the very distant mist of Lake Huron
And I find it ironic that I live on an island at its greatest elevation
Yet I can see not a single drop of water beyond the pools of rain.
On this day, that which follows the tease of summer warmth comes blowing
The whisper of winter casting a dusting snow across the expanse of the pastures
And rolling the sky into a billowed grey blanket held aloft by the magic of
The other air which is still beckoning spring and taunting summer
Refusing to accept the last vestiges of winter its head.
Freely the wind curls and swirls and the vultures glide majestically
Over the Lea and the great circling wall of the woodlands
And a hawk dives into the last stands of last year’s golden wheat
To capture its morning feed while the black birds sit upon the branches
Of the mounds ancient companion Maple tree spreading its branches wide.
The eagle perched upon the branches in the distance, lonely tree
That reminds me of the Serengeti has stopped by for its spring commune
With the watcher of the pasture standing upon his mound
And there flies by the crow with its morning greeting that sounds
A little like something obscene but all done in a playful teasing voice.
And just about the time I think nothing could be better
The sun peaks over a mountain of clouds and laughs at the gelid north wind
And I am reminded of that ancient tale of who is stronger or wiser
As I tighten my coat around me with a chuckle on my lips
That tells its own story dancing quietly in my mind.
For this my friend, where ever you may be lingering and adventuring
Is the true path of a life that refuses to bend to other’s songs
And harbour in the vastness of the imaginarium where thoughts
Dreams, whims, wanderings and fantasies grow into
Great swirls and portals taking you to the realm of Random Rhapsody
