“December 16, 1974, Cheston Cook is still not found, after 1 week of searching. “The police can't stop looking for him, but it is predictable we might not see him again, here, in Greenville high.” said the news reporter, Damian Nash. Mitchell looked at the tv screen, and his face turned white. His best friend was missing, and he wouldn't see him again. He slowly ate up his cocoa puffs with a tear going down his face, and dropping into the bowl of milk. Mitchell got up to the table and started getting goosebumps while remembering what happened last Wednesday.
Mitchell, Elijah, Theo, Maurice, Federico, and Cheston are very good teenage friends who have a tradition. Every Wednesday evening, they all go out to hang. Sometimes they go out for dinner, clubbing, and video games but they’re all-time favorites, going for a walk in the maple forest, which is always restricted but they are some rule breakers, and their moms rarely let them go. On Wednesday, 11th of December, Mitchell, and his friends decided to leave school early together because it was their last day before winter break, and nothing could break their tradition. Elijah's chauffeur went to pick them up and got some pizza.
“Guys I'm so excited for this winter break, we will all stay here in Greenville and we will have so much fun!” exclaimed Maurice with a big smile on his face.
“Yes, we will have so much fun, and we won't need to wait every Wednesday to see each other in the afternoon!” replied Federico.
While everyone was in the car, the ambiance was fun and all of the boys were delighted for what was coming this winter break, but Cheston looked frozen, colder than an ice cube. He didn't open his mouth during the whole car ride, he didn't even move. At first, this seemed normal and everyone thought this was temporary, well it wasn't. When they all arrived at Elijah's big manor, his mom Ms. Campbell welcomed them as if it was their home. They ate delicious cheesy pizzas while playing battleship in teams of three and two. Seconds, minutes, and hours passed but they all had so much fun until the clock struck 6. All of the boys agreed to go to Dave and Buster's to go earn some tickets and play some games, but Cheston disagreed. This was the time he finally opened his mouth, saying the words….
“No thank you, I don't want to go, I'm going to my house.”
“But Cheston, you always love going to the arcade! C'mon!!” insisted Theo.
“I said I don't want to!” scram Cheston while shutting Elijah's house door.
Cheston started running away from Elijah’s house as if he was afraid of it. The four of them hopped into the car and got to the arcade in a blink of an eye. They all had a blast and even won tons of candy because of all the points they earned, which were well deserved. When they all got to their houses, they laid on their bed and slept like a baby. Until the next morning, nobody expected that everything would change. Cheston was found missing and rarely would be found again. This was the time Micthell and his friends realized this winter break, was not like all, this one was odd.
A week passed by, and the time of Mitchell watching the tv, arrived. The iconic group of five was now four. Days passed when suddenly Federico realized, it was a Wednesday. They didn't know what to do, break the tradition, or do it without Cheston? Until Federico came up with a bright idea. He grabbed his phone and face-timed the group.
“Guys, Cheston’s favorite place to hang out is in the maple forest, let's go for a walk and see if we can find him there.” Said Federico with enthusiasm
It was uncommon for them to go on walks, but they all consented to do so. They only went about once every three months, and only Cheston knew the way. Before they all hopped on their bikes, Federico went to the tv room where his mom Martha was laying down on the couch. The news reporter was sharing how the wind outside was strong and cold, so Federico started doubting. Federico went to his room, grabbed his backpack, and filled it with his gramophone, earphones, and jacket. Sprinting down the stairs, he also decided to take with him some spicy lays from the pantry. Federico was filling up his water bottle when he noticed that the television was generating some strange, loud, and unnatural noises. The tv was acting crazy, going from black, to red to all the different colors you can imagine. When suddenly, a black red-eyed creature appeared from the distance of the tv. Federico was starting to wonder what was happening, but he thought this was nothing, just an act. He hugged his mom goodbye and before Federico could run out of the door, Martha said,
“Federico, be careful, you just saw the news it is very cold outside so just be aware, Love you.”
Federico ran out the door shouting, "Yes Mom, I've got everything under control, love you more!"
Before hopping into his bike, he plugged his earphones into his gramophone and started to play one of his favorite songs, come and get your love. He was happily singing along while the people walking down the sidewalk looked at him like something was wrong with him, but the important thing was that he was having fun. When he finally arrived, he met with his four friends and started to bike in the wilderness, with no path. Both of the 4 friends separated and took their own way, but Elijah and Theo stayed together. The weather started to get cold and the trees were the only surroundings near them. The sun was setting and in an instant, the sky was gray, with a full moon. The only sound they could hear was the cracking of the branches on the floor and the crickets chirping.
Elijah's face was starting to turn white, because of the scareness he had inside of him. He walked slowly, step by step, looking side to side. He started to feel a cold breeze surrounding his whole body, but not in a normal way. It smelled like trouble. Until he turned his face to his left and there was no one. Even though Theo was walking with him, he didn't feel anything. Elijah took a deep breathe and said to himself,
“Elijah, don't worry, nothing is wrong, its just a forest.”
“Hey, are you okay?” “You look worried.” said Theo.
“Yes, I just feel something is off.” whispered Elijah.
Theo looked confused, but he didnt feel anything. They both kept walking when suddenly, Elijah rotated his face back and saw something he had never seen before. It was a giant, red-eyed monster which looked like a slender man’s silhouette. Theo had disappeared. Elijah couldn't believe what he saw. He was terrified. Elijah didn't know what to do, there was no signal and he couldn't find anyone. He ran as fast as he could until he tripped with a large branch. Slowly, he started to sob while feeling scared and terrified, he looked down at the floor and there was a suspicious-looking paper. It was a letter, from Cheston. Theo was starting to unfold it and read:
To my dear friends:
I know you came looking for me, but I now know why we were told to stay out of this particular place in the woods. There are terrifying creatures, they would stop at nothing, to make sure you never leave this forest. Beware of the glowing blood-red eyes.
Cheston Cook
Elijah felt a tingle run down his spine, he searched the woods around him and saw nothing. He knew he needed to find his friends. He grabbed the latter and ran. Luckily the 3 crashed into each other. They all had their faces and eyes red. Half an hour passed while they all talked about the survival plan and how to escape. Weirdly they all received the letter as if Cheston sent it to all of them. Elijah started to describe the horrifying monster when suddenly Federico started to realize he was somehow familiar.
“It sounds familiar, I'm sure have seen him before.” exclaimed Federico.
“Tell us, I need to know why is this happening.” responded Maurice.
“While my mom was watching the news, the tv started to make some weird noises and it started lagging.” “there was a similar monster appearing in the distance.” murmured Federico.
As the words left his mouth, his friends hear a twig snap in the distance. They quickly turned in the direction of the sound and saw three pairs of glowing red eyes staring right at them.
They all realized this was their final night alive.
