Ghoulhattan Nights
Born 1951, M, from Gore Bay, CanadaThe Creation of Ghoulhattan
Death was bored. He had been ruling over the underworld for eons, and he felt like he needed a change. He wanted to create something new, something different, something that would challenge his power and creativity.
He summoned his loyal servant, the Grim Reaper, to his throne room. The Reaper bowed before his master, holding his scythe in his skeletal hand.
"What is your command, my lord?" he asked.
"I have a task for you, Reaper," Death said. "I want you to create a new city for me. A city where the souls of the dead can dwell in eternity. A city that reflects my glory and majesty. A city that is unlike any other in the cosmos."
The Reaper was intrigued. He had never heard of such a project before. He wondered what kind of city Death had in mind.
"What kind of city do you want me to create my lord?" he asked.
"A city of horror and beauty, Reaper," Death said. "A city that inspires fear and awe in equal measure. A city that is both a paradise and a nightmare for the dead. A city that is alive and sentient, with a will of its own that can change and adapt to the desires and fears of its inhabitants. A city that can challenge me and entertain me."
The Reaper was astonished. He had never imagined such a city could exist. He wondered how he could create such a city.
"How do I create such a city, my lord?" he asked.
"Use your imagination, Reaper," Death said. "Use your power and skill. Use the materials and resources of the underworld. Use the souls of the dead as your building blocks and your scythe as your tool. Use your vision as your guide."
The Reaper nodded. He felt a surge of excitement and curiosity. He wanted to create such a city for his master. He wanted to see what he could accomplish.
"Where do I create such a city, my lord?" he asked.
"Anywhere you want, Reaper," Death said. "Find a suitable location in the underworld. Find a place that has potential and possibility. Find a place that can accommodate your creation."
The Reaper bowed again. He was ready to begin his task.
"Thank you for this opportunity, my lord," he said. "I will not disappoint you."
"I hope not, Reaper," Death said. "I will be watching your progress with interest. Now go, and do not return until you have finished your work."
The Reaper left the throne room, carrying his scythe with him. He searched the underworld for a suitable location for his new city. He explored the dark and desolate realms, looking for a place that had some spark of life and energy.
He found it in an abandoned realm that had once been inhabited by an ancient civilization of demons. The realm was vast and varied, with mountains and valleys, rivers and lakes, forests and deserts, ruins and monuments. The realm was rich in history and mystery, but also in danger and decay.
The Reaper decided to use this realm as the foundation for his new city. He began to work on his masterpiece, using his scythe to shape and transform the landscape and the structures.
He used his scythe to carve out a massive crater in the center of the realm, creating a huge basin that would serve as the core of his city.
He used his scythe to cut down trees and plants from the forests, creating wooden beams and planks that would serve as the framework of his buildings.
He used his scythe to break rocks and stones from the mountains, creating bricks and tiles that would serve as the walls and roofs of his buildings and to dig up metals and gems from the mines, creating wires and pipes that would serve as the veins and arteries of his city.
He used his scythe to harvest souls from the dead, creating lights and sounds that would serve as the eyes and ears of his city, to weave magic from the air, creating spells and enchantments that would serve as the mind and heart of his city.
He used it to combine all these elements together, creating a complex and intricate network of structures and systems that would serve as the body and soul of his city.
He named his city Ghoulhattan, after an ancient demon god who had ruled over this realm before it was abandoned.
Ghoulhattan was a magnificent sight to behold. It was a colossal metropolis that spanned across the entire crater basin, reaching up to the sky with its towering spires and domes.
Ghoulhattan was a diverse blend of styles and cultures, reflecting the various origins of its inhabitants. It had Gothic cathedrals and Oriental pagodas, Egyptian pyramids and Greek temples, Roman coliseums and Aztec ziggurats, Medieval castles and Modern skyscrapers.
Ghoulhattan was a living and breathing entity, with a personality and a purpose of its own. It could sense the presence and emotions of its inhabitants, and respond to their needs and wants. It could change its appearance and atmosphere, depending on the mood and situation. It could create illusions and realities, depending on the fantasy and fear.
Ghoulhattan was a city of horror and beauty, a city of paradise and nightmare, a city of life and death.
The Reaper was proud of his creation. He felt like he had accomplished something extraordinary. He felt like he had pleased his master.
He returned to the throne room of Death, eager to show him his work.
He bowed before his master, holding his scythe in his skeletal hand.
"I have completed your task, my lord," he said. "I have created a new city for you. A city called Ghoulhattan."
Death smiled. He had been watching the Reaper's progress with interest. He was impressed by his creation. He was curious to see it for himself.
"Show me, Reaper," he said. "Show me your city."
The Reaper nodded. He used his scythe to open a portal to Ghoulhattan, inviting his master to enter.
Death followed him through the portal, entering the new city.
He looked around with wonder and admiration. He saw the splendor and the horror of Ghoulhattan. He felt the power and the mystery of Ghoulhattan. He heard the laughter and the screams of Ghoulhattan.
He loved it.
He turned to his loyal servant, the Grim Reaper, and praised him for his work.
"Well done, Reaper," he said. "You have created a masterpiece. You have created a city worthy of me. You have created a city that I will enjoy for eternity."
The Reaper smiled. He felt a surge of joy and gratitude. He had fulfilled his master's wish. He had earned his master's approval.
"Thank you, my lord," he said. "It was an honor to serve you."
Death embraced him, holding him close.
"It was an honor to have you as my servant," he said. "You are more than a servant to me. You are a friend."
They stood together, looking at their city.
Ghoulhattan welcomed them with open arms.

09/15/2023You seem to have the beginning of a novel here for which you have created the setting for readers....
It is certainly amusing thus far, but too close to reality to be a comedy. More thought provoking than humorous.
Happy short story star of the day, Donald.
