Risky Rhetoric
Born 2008, M, from 98012, United States“Risky Rhetoric”
By: Vache Kosyan
We live in a world where competition is high and striving for perfection is a top priority and sometimes---- is forced by our loved ones. I am humbled to see how difficult it is to get into a good college now compared to my parents' time--making me realize why competition is higher and higher. And when competition is high, we are trying to call out for attention only to get drowned by the other 7.8887 billion voices. I can say that from experience, once we reach high school we get bombarded by the things we have to do to get to a good college. Only then does our motivation drown and voice soften when we see fourteen-year-olds curing cancer and creating new physics equations. Only then is the time where confusion occurs, where the pondering happens. Where the most brilliant ideas and concepts occur only to be overheard by the other 7.88 billion voices. How can our voices be heard?
When taking an honors class or applying to a top college or spending all your money to get a pet in that video game, we are taking risks every day without realizing it. Much like Rhetoric, rhetoric comes with taking risks and is used without us realizing it as well. The best way for your persuasive stance to even be heard is by taking risks. This can mean doing the things that are stopping you such as joining a club or taking an honors class. This can even mean saying something that has been stuck inside of your mind and you have just been afraid to say. Trust me, when those bold ventures pay off, your skillful persuasiveness will set you apart, making you stand out. Whether your inner-competitive self is released by those math multiplication sheets where you will start working on bigger projects. Or getting out of your comfort zone to try something new only to take advantage and base your life in front of that activity.
However, at this point, it is a tradition that we humans tend to think that people who hold great authority over us have a louder voice. We don't realize that all the topics that high school and university teach you have a small cry at the end or a tiny thesis saying that you have the power within yourself to take risks no matter who you are. Whether you are poor or rich, a McDonald's worker, or a financial dealer who handles transactions for multi-billion dollar companies, there is no difference.
Since our opinions are overheard by other voices, but we tend to think this occurs for the wrong reason, we must understand that the only tool we need to gain relevancy is the fact that we can wake up tomorrow. Waking up tomorrow is worth more than a million dollars and each of our opinions can have the same relevancy as those “Above us.” We do not have to be a famous person, or a political leader to account for our opinions to be relevant. But we can obtain “Perfection” for ourselves by taking risks to let's say--become a political leader. But again once you become a political leader your volume of your voice will stay the same. We can pursue a higher level of ourselves or a higher level job. But our voice will have the same volume as when you were born. So how do we make that volume go from 20-100?
Well, we can go deep into the beliefs of religions such as Christianity, where Jesus took a risk of his life to cure our sins. Going down to earth and saying he is the son of god and reminding us to stay in peace that we are all the same. Taking the time to come down to earth and even addressing that he is the son of god is already a huge risk since he knew that the Romans would get offended by such a statement. And yes, he did get burned out when the Romans took a vote on Jesus to be executed. Because of taking advantage of the truth no matter how wrong people would have thought; he is celebrated every day by his believers, and has a special holiday known as “Christmas.” He also got resurrected from such a powerful and honest risk. How such risks can be rewarded by just addressing the truth.
Furthermore, these innovations going from advertisements and laws to biblical stories all came from risk-taking. We can see the media being used as a rhetorical weapon by Andrew Tate. This is because he takes advantage of himself coming from nobody to the most searched person on the internet. Showing that he was once in our shoes and took advantage of things to become who he is now. Talking about that he has gone through all the stages of life from being homeless, even you at one point, and then going through rich. Using his position to take advantage of his growth and address that we can do the same from even being homeless to being a millionaire. He knows who his audience is and what they like to hear such as wanting to be rich, healthy, and strong. He knows that we are at the peak of our position to take advantage of this technological world full of opportunities that ceased to exist at his time. He takes risks by saying very “controversial” things to us that stand out from other podcasters. And sometimes those controversial things that he says get so offending to people that major arguments occur such as arrests. An example of a society-known thing but Tate standing out by saying something “Stupid” is that smoking cigars is good and “Manly” but vaping is not. His only line of reasoning is that cigarettes have testosterone and are “Manly,” but vaping and cigarettes have the same bad consequences. But getting out of your comfort zone to even address the most impossible ideas can be rewarding. That is how Tate is even known globally in the first place, being a magnet to podcasters near his way, constantly gaining fame and wealth. He thinks he has the right to say anything because of his success. He does not understand that each individual has a different idea of success. That is his burndown.
The idea of understanding our position and our audience’s position before taking a risk is seen in the music itself. An example of this would be when a unique/original song is created by an unknown creator only to get less attention than those little kids taking that song and slowing it down or speeding it up or remixing it. The thing is that these “little kids” understand that most of the population of earth likes to hear more drill-beat-fast music nowadays than just old folk-tale music which is exactly how old traditions and indigenous religions are getting extinct. It's all because of the modern world. The creativity of music is getting to a dead-end. Creators are bombarded with problems everyday including copyright, edits, and even AI creating music. The world is changing and evolving fast and people are getting behind in this never-ending marathon. Old music is turning into fast-paced music. Society decides this, not us. Culture shifts and fades away for some.
Then this jumps right in with the world of advertisers who also understand their position and their audience before taking their risks. Advertisers can use a variety of risky methods such as red herring, false dilemma, and even geospatial tracking. Advertisers can identify the average age of a city and house types and life expectancy by looking at population pyramids, maps, and the census. Once advertisers have a hand on these tools, they are not afraid to use them to their advantage. Every time my family goes out of our neighborhood to a location, on the way there is always that one McDonald's there. There my family gets persuaded to take that turn and order. Advertisers understand that our audience would do something such as buy a product or go to a certain destination if it is closer rather than far away which is a true psychological fact. But burnouts have occurred when a certain neighborhood held a fine against a Chipotle for being way too close; like right down the street.
Advertisers also use red herring to divert your attention from the main issue with irrelevant information. This can make an advertisement more memorable and entertaining. Advertisers can also face burnout when individuals with advanced media literacy can examine and reveal the complexities of advertising methods. Advertisers encounter difficulties as informed customers decipher their tales and uncover manipulative practices. This reduces the effectiveness and the rhetoric within the audience. See how rhetoric and risk-taking both connect? But how can we become media literate? How can we identify what risks we are taking? And how will we identify our audiences before doing the indispensable?
A really good introductory level class that still is changing my view on things such as risk-taking would be AP Language English and Composition. A class that will teach you to take advantage and manipulate your audience and how to figure out who your audience is. A class that taught me about the tricks the media uses daily to me and my family and how that affects our lives. A class that teaches you the effectiveness of how one can get possessed passively by the actions of what he does. What I like is that the class teaches you that you are really on your own in this world. Not everything is going to be examined by your teachers and parents. Like fish in the sea, we must learn how to jump out of that fish tank to get to the ocean. Only then will we explore everything. This can be only done with pushing yourself forward and creating goals for yourself. Only you.
And yes, I know that Identifying what risks we can take and how they may impact us takes longer than the blink of an eye. But Some people do not even know how to take risks or who their audience is. You really can’t go out there and take risks without identifying your and others' positioning.
Taking a risk is like sailing a ship over choppy waters. Taking a chance without losing track of where you are is like owning a sturdy boat but never going sailing. The true definition of risk-taking is not only having a strong ship but also using it to overcome obstacles and enjoy the voyage.
But how will you take advantage of this technological world? How will you put in the risks knowing that you may end up burning down? Instead of thinking of new innovations as more barriers for this world, use those new innovations as a portal to your success. The world is not an easy place to overcome and often can be overwhelming. What is the difference between you and the person currently working as a cashier at McDonald's, what is the difference between the most famous president that we talk about to this day and you? Nothing. How will you be any different from the idol? Or the person you talk to every day? I’d rather burn down only once super hard in my life than burn down repeatedly for the rest of my life. “If a man isn’t willing to take some risk for his opinions, either his opinions are no good or he’s no good”---- Ezra Pound.
