Aunt Harriet's Suicide Letter Response

Harriet peered into the crystal water, and watched her reflection waver in the current. The child she held let out a small, pitiful cry, and clung to its mothers collar. Harriet comforted the babe, petting its cheek and cradling its body, while she hummed a soft tune. Then, when the child was silent, she loosened her body and fell forward, waiting for the icy water to freeze her face. But before she hit the shimmering surface, a voice in her head called out.
“Harriet, wait!” The voice urged. Harriet instantaneously tightened all the muscles in her body, slid her foot in front of her, and stopped the fall to the point where the cold water licked her face. Standing back up she looked left and right. Seeing nothing there, she set herself back up for the second fall.
“Harriet!” The voice said again. “Why are you doing this?” Harriet looked all around her.
“If you're really there, whoever you are,” she responded, “I'm doing this because I no longer have any reason to live!”
“What of your child?”
“It would be better if it were to die...”
“Don't you love that babe? Is death the only option?”
“Of course I love my child! Yes death really is the only option...”
“Life is a precious gift given by God, and he wants you to cherish it.”
“How can I live in this tortured world? What is God doing?”
“But he is working through you right now! He chose you to carry that child so that you may start something of new life within this shattered place!”
“But how can I be of use all alone?”
“Has God ever left you? Has his warmth ever been ripped away? Trust God, and he shall deliver you from evil.”
“And what of the child? What can I do to keep it from being found out?”
“Hide the babe in Gods hands. He shall protect it, for it is his child.”
“But if I were to just be put to rest, it would all go away...”
“Harriet. God has chosen you, put his faith in you. Pick up your cross, and go with The Lord, and his Word.” The voice faded, and soon dispersed all together. Harriet peered into the crystal water, and though the current shook, her reflection stood perfectly still. Harriet raised her head, and dried her tears. She hugged the baby close, and left the frozen water to cry for her.
