One Last Goodbye
Born 1999, F, from Johns Creek, Georgia, United StatesMy body felt numb as I laid in the cold, wet snow below me. Snowflakes were softly falling on my face. I was sure my face was already beginning to get frost bite. Maybe, I was just being over dramatic, but it sincerely felt as if my face was going to catch fire any minute now.
I heard the quiet crunching of snow and someone sit down beside me that no one else would be able to hear. I didn't have to look to know who it was.
"Alex," Jake's beautiful voice called to me.
"Leave me, Jake." I tried to command, but I knew he wouldn't obey. "You are ruining my sulking."
His soft chuckle filled my ears. "Why would you do that, my love?"
"Because I miss you." I answered simply. Tears began to spill over my eyes.
"I'm sorry, but you must move on, now. I'm gone." Sadness filled his husky voice.
I started to regain feeling in my body again as I sat up. I looked at Jake's transparent face.
"I love you," I whispered.
"I love you too," Jake said. If he could cry, I'm sure he would be doing it now. "I'm sorry I did this to you. I didn't want to leave you, but I had to. The illness took over my body. I had no more strength."
Tears were pouring down my face onto the snow, melting it.
"I tried to be strong for you. I really did." He said.
My cheeks were covered in my salty tears that were still leaking from my eyes heavily.
"I know you did." I looked into his light blue eyes.
I wanted so badly to rest my hand upon his cheek like I used to when his mom and dad were arguing. I wanted to be able to make him smile again. I wanted to be able to kiss him one more time before he left. I couldn't, and I won't ever be able to ever again because he is dead.
"When are you leaving?" I asked.
"That's why I came," Jake responded quietly. "I came to say good bye."
I gave a cold, hard laugh. It had no emotion or feeling in it.
"You know," I started. "With my supposed gift of being able to see and help ghosts, I never thought I'd see the one person I opened up to, I loved so deeply, with this gift of sight."
Jake's eyes filled with sorrow.
"I thought we'd grow old together," I continued. "We'd have a million and one kids like we said we would. Even if we didn't do both of those things, I thought we would be together forever."
The outline of Jake's body began to glow a golden light.
"You're glowing." I was astonished.
"I must go my love." He answered calmly.
I turned my head to the ground trying to think of something to say. The tears had stopped for a moment as I tried to hold them back. At last, they came running down my face again slowly dripping off the sides of my chin.
Jake lifted his hand to my cheek. It felt different. It wasn't the same as when he was alive. His hand used to cover my cheek in warmness. Now, it was cold, and I could barely even feel it.
"My love, I have one request," He said.
I turned my gaze back to him. My green eyes looked at him expectantly.
"Promise me that you will let go of me. You can forget me if you want, but I want you to be happy. I don't care if you fall in love with any one else. I just want your happiness."
I shook my head. "I will never let you go. I will not fall in love with anyone else. I love you. No one could take your place."
"Alex," He warned. Jake looked as if he wouldn't let me be stubborn on this decision like I had been on the previous ones.
I didn't say anything.
"Promise me," He ordered.
I cowered over in fear. He looked beyond scary. He was serious about this. I should have known he wouldn't let this go.
He saw my expression and softened his voice. "Promise me."
I hesitated. "Fine."
He smiled at me. "That's my girl."
I tried not to smile, but the corners of my mouth slowly pulled upwards. Jake was one of those people that when they smile it's hard not to smile as well.
Jake leaned in and gave me a gentle kiss. Afterward, my lips felt tingly and cold. I would not forget this moment. Jake and I's last kiss and our last moment together.
Jake got up from the snow. He began walking forward into the trees of the forest. He stopped for one moment and looked at me.
"Goodbye forever, my beautiful Alexandria." His musical voice drifted through the wind and reached my ears.
"Goodbye, my lovely Jacob." I responded.
There was a bright shining light. I had to cover my eyes with my forearm, so that I wouldn't go blind.
When the light faded, I saw my Jacob no more. I saw my shining light no more. I saw my soul no more.
I raked my fingers through my dark brown almost black hair and laid down in the snow once more. I painted an image of him in my brain. His light brown hair and light blue eyes were engraved in my mind, along with his tan skin and winning smile, for the next hour.
During this time, I began to feel empty as if I would never be happy again. I knew I would feel this way for a long time. But, I also knew that I would one day feel happy again for my Jacob. I had to see to his very last wish. If I didn't what kind of ghost whisperer would I be?
