A MIRACLE
Born 1982, M, from ELDORET, KenyaA MIRACLE:
My brother rented a half bed room house in Eldoret. He was a day scholar at a polytechnic there; not very far from his room. The room was partitioned using a pink cotton sheet; one side was the bed and the other was the kitchen space. Anyway, I will not say much on how he lived there; let us leave that for another day.
On the day I went to visit him, I got lucky as the day coincided with the ASK’s (Agricultural Society of Kenya) trade fair in the same town. As soon as I met him in his house, delivered the milk and a bunch of bananas I had brought for him, he quickly made some tea for me. We then decided to go together and pay for the entrance fee at the ASK show with the money I had been given at home for him to pay house rent.
There was a lot of fun going on in the show-ground; the Kenya Police band entertained us with their thrills, then other various groups of choirs, comedians, acrobats and other entertainers also graced the occasion. There were other entertainments outside the main arena and the most favorite was labeled, “omega”. It was a big tent where some local artistes performed inside and fans paid at the entrance to enter. My brother got into a bad company here and they decided to enter leaving me stranded outside. Luckily for me, there were other free forms of entertainment as I strolled about.
Time runs fast whenever there is fun. Soon it was twilight. People started vacating the venue. I also headed to my brother’s abode only to find the door locked! Dusk was rapidly giving way to darkness and I was beginning to get cold. Being new and strange to the neighbors, I was suspected of being a burglar and they told me to go ‘somewhere’ and come back later, rather than stand at a locked door. I heeded their advice, only I did not have ‘somewhere’ in my mind to go. As I roamed around, I found a video hall not far away and decided to take my refuge there for some time.
Three hours later, I emerged from the hall. It was late into the night and the hall was being closed. I went to my brother’s house and found it still locked. The neighbors were already asleep. Anger and fear started getting into my nerves. Didn’t my brother know that I was still outside at that time of the night? Did he care about me? A lot of questions crossed my mind. I was at a loss on what to do as everywhere had closed down.
As I stood there in the darkness, a police vehicle pulled up nearby. I crouched very low hoping that they would not notice my presence. But I was too late. A torch light was illuminated directly at my eyes; then everything else that followed happened too fast. In fact, I myself was stunned at the speed I used to round a corner with the shouts of the policemen behind me helping to pump adrenaline into my legs. They gave up the chase very soon. But I kept running for about three more kilometers, finally stopping near some rental houses. An Idea struck me. No one was probably going to use the outside bathrooms at night. I decided to enter one, to take my forty winks for the night; away from police and thugs!
However, as I entered the bathroom, I almost stumbled on the body of a living young man! In fright, I quickly retraced my steps ready for another dash for a world record, but the chap called me by my name!
“Who are you?” I recognized him before he could answer. Boaz! He was my class mate in school. I was astonished. “What are you doing here?”
“Running from the police”, he answered.
It seemed we were in the same pot of circumstances. He had also come to Eldoret to visit a cousin. A guy who was with his cousin had given him the keys to his room and had gone with his cousin to a night club. The guy had told him that he was going to find a lad outside his house. Unfortunately, being new also in town, my classmate had gotten lost after being chased around by the police.
“I don’t even know the guy who gave me the keys personally, but his name was Paul”.
“Paul!” I could not hide my surprise.
“Yes. He is called Paul. Why are you surprised?”
“Paul is my brother. Give me those keys and follow me!”
