The Big Match
Born 1967, F, from Tacoma, WA, United States“Well, we may not be able to leave our stations, but at least we can still watch the fight on VR,” said Ben to Mary. They were seated side by side, facing a large array of buttons and gadgets that met somewhere in the middle of a large consul panel. ”Here, put in your lenses and set them to twenty-two.”
As Mary did so, a three dimensional view of the two combatants filled most of her vision. A small array of controls ranged along the bottom of her line of sight, and were operated with both eyes.
Silas the Machine was facing off against the Incredible Victor Cruz, and the match was expected to be one of the most exciting to occur in quite some time. Both men were huge and deadly, and the betting had been fierce.
The match began when Silas landed a blow right in Victor’s face. His nose started to bleed, but the man barely noticed because he was pummeling his opponent like a punching bag.
“Yes!” Ben Shouted. “Get him!”
Ben’s hands were clenched into fists, and one of them accidentally punched a button on the console. Suddenly, everything became weightless, including the combatants and the crowd in the arena who watched them.
“Damn, Ben, what did you do?” Mary gasped as she caught a hold of the edge of the console so she wouldn’t float away.
"I don't know," he admitted, "I wasn't looking."
Soon a technician entered the room using hand holds along the ceiling. He somersaulted down and pushed a button, and suddenly everything dropped. Gravity was restored.
“Try not to do that again” he said.
“Sorry,” Ben said contritely.
Silas and Victor had fallen back into the ring and the fight resumed. With a strong uppercut Silas knocked Victor out, and the crowd roared their approval as they tried to find their seats again.
Ben sighed, and gave five credits to Mary as she turned off the show with a contented smile.
