Blinded By Beauty
Born 1995, M, from Lahore, PakistanIt all began on a fine, cold, stiff and misty Monday morning. My dad, a retailer, had a corner store back in our hometown. This shop had a rich traditional and cultural value in our family. My grandfather bought this shop half a century ago when he used to be in the list of famous personalities living in the state.
I had just been promoted to my 5th grade and was on holidays. The desire of spending a day at work with my father had always been my utmost aspiration. So after the raising of my hopes for a long while, my dad finally agreed to take me with him one day.
This shop of ours was quite distant from our home so we had to walk a long way down the track to reach there. After walking for a few minutes, I turned back and our home was not to be seen anymore. By this time I knew that there was no turning back now. The thought of getting bored had already started haunting my mind. I wished for the best and it was not long when we finally reached my dad’s workplace.
With a shrill, the rolling metal door in front of the store was uprooted and we went inside a cozy yet crazy looking cocktail house of colors. My mind was completely flabbergasted by the amazing vibrant colors spread everywhere; this seemed to be just the perfect place to stick my boots.
My father quickly took a seat and started some mathematical calculations while my wits kept grazing upon the continuum of colors spread in every direction. It was an upstart to a new week so my dad looked pretty busy in his computations. We had got up very early in the morning when the entire humanity was filling up their dreams so there wasn’t a word of noise in the ambiance around us.
At first I was completely astounded by the surroundings because I had never seen such a delightful show of spectrums at a single place, but as the time started taking its toll, I began losing interest in all this stuff. After passing more and more minutes there, I quite genuinely came to know that this work of my dad is clearly a serious test of fortitude, persistence, serenity and belief.
It had been two hours since we’d been in this store of ours and now finally the light of humanity arose when our first customer opened the door and greeted me and my father. This was a great sign of relief for both of us. It had been an eternity since I was left out high and dry in that workplace without a sight of humanity.
Afterwards, as the office hours started, a lot of new faces showed up and it was not long before many of the items in the store were bought away. With my father busy as ever, I felt completely restless, tired and ignored. I started thinking that it wasn’t the best of decisions to hang out at my dad’s work for a day. I promised myself not to make such a mistake again in my entire life. With these thoughts lingering upon my mind, suddenly my eyes firmly got wedged to an unforgettable sight.
It was all instantaneous. My eyes became still, thoughts became numb, colors darkened, time kind of stopped for a moment and everything outside my view went completely distorted. It was a feeling like never before. I had experienced probably every emotion of life but never like this before. It was eye-catching, heart pounding, feet dazzling and everything else you can dream of.
A good looking gentleman entered the store and beside him was his cute, young looking, attractive and exceptionally beautiful daughter, quite near to my age. The guy greeted my father, searched for some items he probably was in need of, and after a while both of them left the store without buying anything of much value.
It was love at first sight. Although they left empty handed, in these few minutes, someone absolutely enriched my soul inside out. I was completely overwhelmed by that girl’s enchanting voice, seductive expressions and addictive emotions. Everything started seeming worthless from that point onwards. She was purely a symbol of divine beauty.
We came back home in the evening with my father asking me about my experience at the store, but I was not able to answer anything at all to him. The truth is that his voice was hardly getting in my ears. There was nothing left on my mind. It was like I had forgotten everything I had ever learned in my lifetime. The only thing making its way up to my mind was when I am going to see her glance the next time around.
From that day onwards, every weekend I accompanied my dad to work. At times I even tried to inquire from my dad about the person who was with that unblemished beauty, but he never gave me a satisfactory reply. Whatever the case was, I started wasting six hours of every Saturday and Sunday just to see a glimpse of my first love. Getting bored to death, I kept waiting hours and hours for someone I did not even know the name of.
It was a bright morning of 14th February that day. People were mad about the Valentine’s Day celebrations and their valentines. But for me it was a pretty tragic tale. It had been three months since that confrontation of mine occurred and until now I had nearly given up all my hopes to ever see her face again. Sitting beside a rack of greeting cards, I decided to end this regime of finding my lost grandeur and concentrate back on my studies. I was facing a major setback in my studies just because of thinking so much about this royal highness that used to come in my dreams. But just as I thought of executing all my desires, something majestical happened.
The door of the store opened up with a shunt and so I again came across my life’s biggest desire until now. This was the moment I had been waiting for the last 3 months and it came right in front of me. Again the guy and his daughter started searching for something which this time around they found quite easily. In doing so, they remained in my sights for a couple of minutes.
This time, I wanted to make sure that I made myself noticed enough. For this, I needed to diverge her attention from the surroundings and bring myself in the spotlight for a few seconds.
In the first place, I used my god gifted gestures and expressions to make her notice me. A lot of smiles passed between both of us and soon it seemed that I had somewhat conveyed my message. After getting the desired attention I needed, I quickly took out a Valentine’s Day card from the rack and quickly wrote some lines of affection on it. I waited for the perfect moment and so when they were about to leave the shop after purchasing some books, I swiftly rolled down the card and hid it inside one of the books that was purchased.
That was the last of it. For months, there was nothing more that ever came back. Soon my studies became my utmost preference and the tides of love had certainly turned away from me. My studies had taken over my mind and somehow I had left my ambitions to meet my destiny ever again. Whenever I thought about this fact, I knew that I had made an impression. If she would ever find the stuff I wrote in that card, she would definitely never ignore me.
It was our annual day at the school. A lot of competitions were being held between students from our school and students competing from some other schools. I had never been a sports junky from the very beginning, and so on this day as well, I was not among those taking part in some sport. But still, it never meant that I was only a spectator on that day. Because of my renowned skills of creative writing throughout my school, my teachers recommended me to take part in the annual Creative Writing Competition being held in our school this year.
It was a session of great excitement, exhilaration and enthusiasm. We all were seated in an enormous hall and allowed to put our creative engines to work. Everyone looked so busy thinking that it seemed a really tough battle for fame and recognition. Girls and boys making it an all out effort to get to the top spot made it look seriously competitive. I, on the other hand, in the beginning had a sluggish start, but it was not long when it became a matter of honor and self-respect for my soul as well. We continuously wrote for about 3 hours and in the end it was finally the time to hear the verdict out loud.
Only the top three positions were announced. Luckily I managed to secure the 2nd one. There was a delay in announcing the top spot which enthralled all of us present in that hall in a great number. Looking at others faces, I kept wondering who was going to be crowned the best among us. At last the name was announced and to my surprise, the face behind the name was quite familiar to me. It was a girl, and it was the same girl. I felt really surprised and pretty glad to be a part of such a distinctive coincidence. I quickly wrapped up my prize and waited for her to step down from the stage so that we could have a talk. After the prize distribution ceremony, the show quite unfortunately, abruptly came to an end. With so many people standing in front of me at the same time, my view was completely blocked and I started waiting impatiently for all of them to leave the hall.
It took five to ten minutes before everyone was out of the hall except me and my prize. I stared at the stage but there wasn’t anybody there. I was left completely dumfounded right in the middle of that hall cursing myself. I ran outside, searched for her for some time and after getting disappointed went to the main gate of our school where there might come any last chance of finding her, probably departing from the institute. Just as I reached there I saw her face in one of the car’s window parked at quite some distance from where I was standing at the moment. Just as I thought of getting near the car, I saw a man getting in the driver seat of the vehicle. It was probably her driver which meant that I didn’t have much time to stop her from leaving.
I ran as fast as I could but just as I came close to the car, the vehicle simply drove away. I stared again at the window and saw her staring back at me with a smile. This was another encounter between me and her, again without the use of words. I had thought so much about her in my mind until now but I never got lucky enough to speak a single word to her. The only progress that came in our relationship that day was that I finally came to know her name when it was called out loud on the stage.
Time again perished and I landed in my High School situated in another state. Average in studies, but exceptionally bright in co-curricular activities made me win the hearts of many. High school life was much more revolutionized than my early teenage school. I came across many friends out of which many betrayed me, many stayed beside me, whereas many ignored me. At times they did ask me about my childhood and if there was anybody I always wanted to be with? I felt no regret or shame in speaking her bold name out of my not so bold mouth.
Time quickly passed by and suddenly it was our last week left at the high school. Everyone preparing their skits and burlesques with great enthusiasm and zeal. I was the one taking part in poster making and card designing for the farewell ceremony. We were making nearly all the posters that were going to be displayed on the final day and so, with time getting short, we didn’t have much of it left to prepare the cards which came in the end. Another sign of impatience came when one of our group members got sick and had to take some days off. At that moment it seemed that this work given to us was nearly impossible and we would not be able to finish it in time.
With just three days remaining to the grand day of our lives, it was the final day of preparation. We had to submit all our creations by the next morning so that they could be organized and displayed accordingly. In a great hustle and bustle, we were busy giving final touches to our well designed masterpieces. My friends were providing me cards, whereas I was giving away the final recommendation of what to select and what not to. With nothing else on my mind, my brain was totally focused on just one task and that was the task of finishing my work of art in time. My friends were handing me these cards from my back and I was not able to see who was giving me which card. In this muddled and chaotic situation, someone handed me a card which took me completely by surprise.
It was quite an old card which astonished me because it contained my own hand writing. The moment just clogged my brain and I turned back to see who had given me the card. I looked back and a flashback beleaguered my mind which took me nearly a decade back in the past. This was the same card I had given to someone who influenced my life more than anyone else I had come across in my entire life until now. To my surprise, that someone was standing right in front of me and I was left completely speechless.
By now, I had almost forgotten her, especially considering that I had changed my residence, and now meeting her here had never occurred to me. But still, this didn't mean that I had utterly discarded her form my memory. Obviously this could never have happened, no matter how far I may have ended up from my hometown.
She told me that she had gone to my home one day to meet me and reply to my compliments written in that card which I had dropped in her shopping bag. From there she came to know that surprisingly I had selected the same city for my high school education as she had.
She arrived here and came to know about this farewell party of our high school getting underway and so she decided to return what was rightfully mine here on this day to make me remember my affectionate feelings encapsulated in that piece of paper for her. After hearing all this, I opened the card one more time and noticed three additional words written in the end as a reply. Those three words were “same to you”. With a smiling face, I looked up and saw her already smiling. I forgot that I had to do anything at all for this function and went on to find a corner where we could sit and have a lively chat.
That was the time when my years ago wish was finally fulfilled and so we talked and talked, ignoring the precious time passing by. Obviously for me, there couldn’t be a more precious time than the one I was rejoicing in at that moment. It was a lifelong dream come true. She told me that she knew my stance as early as when I saw her for the first time inside my dad’s store, and by the second meeting she had very well attained the same feelings for me as I had written to her on that Valentine’s Day card. Even after knowing each other for such a long time, we finally became friends on that day.
From that day onwards, we always remained in contact with each other and an association started emerging between the two of us. After getting done with our high schools, we both travelled back to our home city together. There was so much to talk about that time literally dashed past us. In those holidays of ours, we finally informed our parents about our love story for the first time and so after a few days my parents invited her family to a dinner at our home.
It was not long before both of us became very close friends. We went back together and took admission in the same university. After spending four more years together, a bond of mutual understanding, collaboration, commitment, perceptiveness and cooperation developed between each of our souls.
By now, we had become more than best friends and, after the graduation from our university, we decided to give our relationship a new step forward. So after six more months with the consolidation and permission of our parents from both sides, we were finally pronounced as husband and wife.
