‘Hey, Jack,’ shouted John, ‘wait for me’. ‘Hi John, today Edmond and Shriya are not to be seen’ said Jack. Edmond and Shriya, were two friends of Jack and John. These four children were the pride of the school, really good at science and inventions. Today was the day when everyone had to invent something for science exhibition and so Jack and John were looking for their two best friends to come and join them. ‘Here comes Edmond and Shriya,’ said Jack to John. ‘Hi guys, have you thought of something to invent for science exhibition?’ asked Shriya. ‘What about inventing a dancing robot?’ asked Edmond giggling. Everyone glanced up at John because everyone knew John liked dance as much as science and inventions. John was looking cross eyed to Edmond. He said, ‘This is not a time to giggle Edmond, we have to be serious about this. By the way I was thinking to invent a Time Machine, wouldn’t it be a…’ ‘A TIME MACHINE?’ everyone interrupted. ‘Yes, don’t you like the idea?’ John asked. ‘Ya, I also think it would be a great idea to invent a time machine, after all we are not to give up,’ said Shriya. Everyone nodded. Jack said, ‘There are some wood pieces lying beside the storeroom, we can take them and borrow some wires from the science lab for the Time Machine’. ‘O.K., now hurry! We are getting late for school,’ Edmond said.

They were just in time for school as the bell rang. They hurried to the class. Mrs. Stephen was looking as if reddened in anger. ‘Mam may we come in?’ they all said at once. ‘Come and stand here in a line’ Mrs. Stephen commanded. All of them were quiet. ‘Every time, why, why only you are late for school?’ ‘Mam we were…,’ Jack tried to say something but Mrs. Stephen interrupted. ‘Busy in some inventions, Mr. Jack? If yes then I remind you it is not your science period, it is your English period. Now go and have your seats.’ All the four went to take their seats. Edmond murmured to Joe [another boy], ‘Mrs. Stephen crows like anything when she is angry.’ ‘Yes you are right, by the way what’s your invention for the science exhibition?’ Joe asked. ‘You’ll get to know very soon’ Edmond replied.

Two hours went like that and science period came. Everyone was excited. Bell rang and science mam, Mrs. Smith, came in. ‘Children, today you have to invent something for the science exhibition, which is day after tomorrow, so you have got two days to invent something,’ Mrs. Smith said. Everyone got into their groups and started arranging their things required for the invention. And Mrs. Smith went to take a round, asking every child their invention name. ‘Oh! What are you making Jeff?’ she asked. ‘An ice cream maker,’ Jeff replied. ‘And you Mr. Thompson?’ ‘A truth box’. She passed towards Joe, Nina, Peter and came towards Edmond, Shriya, Jack and John; Mrs. Smith asked them ‘What are you making John?’ ‘A Time Machine’ everyone replied in excitement. Mrs. Smith was not so much amazed on hearing what they were going to invent, because she knew that inventing a Time Machine would take a long time so they wouldn’t be able to invent it in just two days. So she went away saying nothing. Shriya asked John ‘Do you think we’ll be able to invent a Time Machine in two days?’ ‘It may look impossible but if we have the spirit to do something we can do anything’ said John. Everyone felt confidante on hearing John’s reply. They busied themselves in inventing a Time Machine. After much hard work they were having The Time Machine in front of their eyes.

Jack asked, ‘don’t you think we should check it, to see if it’s working or not?’ ‘So are you guys thinking we should have a ride in this?’ asked Shriya looking rather nervous. ‘Yes of course,’ said John excitedly. ‘But I don’t think it would be great to ride in a Time Machine, invented by us’ Jack said. Edmond said ‘Oh, you guys are scaring me too. I think John is right. We should have a ride in the Time Machine.’ Everyone had to agree to John hesitatingly or unhesitatingly. They sat in the Time Machine and John pressed some date month and year and, surprisingly, it worked! By a snap of shock they were…in the past. Everyone was scared. Edmond thought that they were in their school’s playground only and told everyone not to worry, but unfortunately he was wrong. They were in the past. They did not understand which place they had bumped into. If they looked upwards only trees were to be seen. Not a single person was to be seen. ‘Let’s take a walk here, maybe we will find someone to help,’ John said. Everyone liked the idea. But it seemed as if the jungle was neverending because as long as they went they felt that they were going deeper and deeper into the forest. They were exhausted and lied down for a minute to take rest.

Suddenly there were loud thumping noises of animals and screams and shouts of people. They all felt scared. Suddenly there appeared some people wearing skirts made from skins of animals and leaves. They were shouting and screaming in an unusual manner ‘oooooooooo’ and ‘aaaaaaa’. When they saw the four kids, astonished, they dragged them to their leader. No one of the four understood what they should do. But they understood that they were with tribes and they were in history. Edison murmured to John, ‘It’s not as boring as studying history.’ The leader of the tribes was surprised at the clothes they were wearing because at that time they used animal skin or leaves to cover themselves. Everyone thought that they were monsters because they were unusual for their race and decided to kill them. The four of them were terrified seeing them taking out the swords. John tried to speak to them ‘We are not monsters, we are humans and have come from future, and we are not going to harm you.’ There were voices coming from the tribes such as ‘oooooo’, ‘aaaaaa’ or ‘aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa’. No one was understanding their language.

Suddenly John remembers that he had once invented a translator and had kept it in his pocket, and had totally forgotten about it. He gave a pair of translators to his friends and told them to wear it in their ears. After that the leader of the tribes spoke, ‘Who you kids are and from where have you come?’ ‘We have come from the future’ Jack said. ‘How can we believe you that you have come from future and cannot harm us?’ the leader of the tribes asked. The tribes were shouting like animals and saying, ‘Kill them… Kill them.’ Shriya whispered to Edmond ‘If ma’am would be here she could judge who shouts more than us.’ ‘We will put them in prison till we get some evidence that they have come from the future, if not then we’ll kill them’ commanded the leader. They were dragged and kept in a prison.

Night came; they were given food that was leaves and grass. ‘I’m not going to eat this yucky food’ Shriya declared. ‘Why only you? Will we eat these leaves or grass? Never, ever!’ Edmond screamed. ‘What happened to John? He’s not saying anything,’ Jack asked. ‘He’s thinking of some idea to escape from here. He’s not like you people, okay, he’s very serious guy,’ Shriya said. ‘Ya Shriya is right. I was thinking of some plan to get out from here, because I don’t think these people will let us go so easily’ John said. ‘But how will we get out of here?’ asked Edmond. There were murmuring sounds to be heard from the children. Then John told everyone ‘Be ready, tomorrow is the day when we have to follow our plan.’

Morning came and all the four were excited and frightened too because if they will be caught it can cause death to them. They were in the trail of their life’s biggest adventure. John asked everyone to wait there and went to one of the tribes standing there, watching them. John asked ‘Please can I get some water, we all are very thirsty. ‘Ok, I will get you some water’ said one of the tribes. He went to take some water. After some time he came with a bowl made of mud and full with water. Jack mixed some sleepy medicine in it. Then Edmond took out two spicy chocolates and went to the tribes. Edmond asked ‘Sir please have these chocolates.’ ‘Chocolates, we have never ever seen or ate this type of thing’ said one of the tribes. ‘Let’s have this’ said another tribe filled with curiosity. Edmond gave one to each of them. They ate it and after eating it they felt very spiced and asked for water. Shriya gave the water in which they had mixed sleepy medicine. After drinking the water they felt in a deep sleep. John felt it a right time to run away. He opened the cage door and started running with his friends. When the leader of the tribes went to see the prisoners, he was utterly shocked to see the door open and the tribes sleeping. He ordered all his people to look for the run-away-prisoners. John told everyone ‘Run, friends they must be looking for us, we must reach the Time machine.’ Suddenly Edmond saw the tribes coming and so he warned everyone to run fast. Suddenly Shriya fell down, John held her and they all started running again. They saw the Time Machine and started running towards it. They sat in the Time Machine and John typed some numbers and pressed the red button. They vanished in air and reached in a ground. Edmond thought that it must be their school ground but when they turned their head they saw mud houses in a row. They started wandering here and there. Suddenly a small boy of their age went up to them and asked them that who are they and from where they have came. Jack asked ‘Which country is this?’ ‘America’ answered the boy. ‘What’s your name boy?’ asked John. ‘Edison, Thomas Alva Edison’ answered the boy. All the four started looking each of them, because they were standing in front of the famous inventor of tube light. ‘I think we have came to the time when Edison was so small,’ said Jack. ‘Please come to my house and have some food’ requested Edison. All the four went to his house. His mother placed some food in front each of them. ‘How are you here?’ asked Edison. ‘Actually we have come from future from the Time Machine we have invented,’ Jack said. ‘WOW! It means that you are inventors,’ Edison said. ‘It’s all because we have taken you as an idol; after all you are a great inventor’ Shriya said excited. ‘What? But I am not an inventor,’ Edison said. ‘Oh, she means to say a similar inventor just like you is our idol’ Edmond said. Edison took all of them for a walk. They were having a talk with each other suddenly some firing was to be hear in a distance. Edison told everyone that some thieves ran from the police station a few weeks ago. ‘These thieves are very clever, every time police is after them but they are not to be caught,’ Edison said. ‘Do you think we are safe here?’ asked Shriya looking a bit frightened. ‘I think we should go back home’ Edison said. They were on their way to home; suddenly a robber came and took Shriya with him. That was done in a minute that no one could understand anything. ‘We can’t go back without Shriya’ John exclaimed. ‘Why did they take Shriya with them?’ Edmond asked. ‘To escape from the hands of police’ Edison replied, ‘Every time they come here and take one or two children with them. After that they make the kids steal forcefully.’ Then we have to do something fast’ John said. Everyone stood there for a minute thinking of an idea so that they could freed Shriya. Suddenly Edison exclaimed ‘I know where we would find Shriya’ exclaimed Edison, ‘I sell newspapers in a train, and sometimes children followed by a man comes to the train for stealing peoples accessories. May be this time they’ll tell Shriya to rob.’ Then we must go now and wait for them in the train’ John said. All the three bought tickets and took their seats in the compartment. Suddenly a sobbing of a girl followed by a harsh voice was to be heard. ‘It must be Shriya’ Jack said. John told Edison to rang up the police and call them here fast. In a minute or two the police surrounded the thieves and put them behind bars. The inspector freed the children and thanked kids for helping them. All the four waved good bye to Edison and seated in the time machine. Suddenly the time machine vanished and they found themselves in a tiled floor. ‘Ok now we are on the right place’ Edmond exclaimed. When they saw the surroundings they were in total horror because not a bit it was looking like the same. Suddenly they heard a blast and found the time machine in bits. ‘Now we’ll never go back to the right place’ cried Shriya. They asked a man which year was going on and they were told the year 2039! Everyone started blaming John because if he didn’t get the idea of inventing a time machine they would be safe. John was feeling bad but he didn’t say anything, he knew his friends were saying so because they were feeling lonely in this world and wanted to get back. Jack thought his friends will never appreciate for asking help from someone. So he crept from there and went to a man standing nearby and told him the whole matter. The man was actually a scientist and agreed to help him. He went with Jack to his friends and made a circle around the four friend using chalk. Then by a flash of light all the four went to the right place they should be in. ‘Never ever going to invent a time machine’ John said and everyone started laughing. At last they had reached the right place. In the year 2039 the scientist was smiling because he knew these kids as his name was JOHN and he was happy seeing him once again as a young boy. Here in the present John didn’t know that he was going to become a great scientist. He was happy in returning home. Everyone apologized to John for behaving rudely. John was not all angry on them. He forgave them happily.
