Extra Innings
Born 1997, M, from Illinois, United StatesIt was the top of the first. The leadoff batter was Dylan Smith. Dylan was arguably the best hitter in the league. The only problem was, on the mound, was Robert Florence. Robert was a 12 year old giant, who had to shave twice a day.
Dylan stepped into the box, while doing so he looked into Robert`s eyes, he knew he was going to have to work hard to end up on base. When he was ready, Robert started his windup. Dylan took the first pitch for a strike. Woah! that was fast, was the first thing that came to mind. Dylan stepped out of the box and got a sign from his coach Tom. He took a deep sigh and stepped back in.
Once again Robert starts his windup. Quickly Dylan picks up on the ball and takes a huge hack at it. Crack!! the ball flies into the gap. Dylan gets on his horse, he flies around first looking for the ball. Almost to second he heard he coach yell get down! He dives into second and the umpire yells safe.
The first thing that raced through Dylan`s mind was, Yes! He got up and took his leadoff. His team`s second batter struckout on three pitches, Robert made him look goofy. The third batter singled to left field, Dylan moved over to third and was thinking about going home but thought better of it, respecting the left fielder`s arm. That fielder was Jim Short, one of their team`s pitchers. Jim had a strong arm but it was nothing compared to Robert`s, he was also fast, that is why he played outfield.
Jim and Dylan had been friends for a very long time. This was the first year they didn`t play on the same team. They have lived in the same neighborhood since forever, plus they hangout all the time. They love playing catch and talking about and watching baseball together. That's how he knew he had a good arm.
The fourth batter strikes out taking a huge cut at the ball.
"Remember there are two outs," Dylan`s coach told him.
"I know," Dylan replied.
The fifth batter singles to right and Dylan scores easily. Just what they needed, to jump on them early. That's the best way to beat the other team. They had talked about it all practice the day before. There next batter grounds out to end the inning. Dylan`s team`s pitcher was Randy Welch, a decent pitcher that could get the job done. He could place the ball where ever he wanted it. Randy made quick work of the first two batters. The third batter was Robert, he was a very powerful hitter due to his size and strength. Randy pitched the ball, he had made a mistake and threw it down the middle of the plate. He hit the ball so hard it seemed like it was flying forever. It had cleared the fence by a mile. Randy watched as Robert rounded the bases. Robert had a smile on his face that, to Randy, wouldn`t go away. The next batter flew out on a high fly ball to end the inning.
After the first it was all tied up 1 to 1 and it actually stayed like that for the next four innings. The team`s that were battling back and forth could not produce runs against each other, but it was still an amazing game so far. Four 3 up 3 down innings innings in a row.
"This game is one of the best I`ve ever seen," the announcer said to the crowd. They all agreed.
In the top of the sixth Dylan stepped in once again, although this time he was facing their closer, Jim. They Smiled at each other, it was gonna be a good battle. On the first pitch Dylan took it for a strike on the inside corner of the plate. On the next pitch Dylan expected a curveball in the dirt and thats exactly what he got. The count was 1-1. Dylan stepped out and got the bunt signal from his coach. He looked at him with a face that showed that he really didn`t want to but his coach didn`t care. He dropped down the bunt and reached first base safely on a bobble by the third basemen. The next batter grounded into a double play. Two outs. There last batter of the inning hit a ball way up into the air but it got cought at the warning track.
It was the bottom of the 6th inning and it was the last half inning of regulation play. The first two batters struckout in six pitches. The next batter was Robert. A homerun would win the game, an out would mean extra innings. He took a big rip at the first pitch and pulled it foul by just a foot. The second pitch was thrown in the dirt for a ball. He smacked the next one to the short stop who made an amazing diving catch for the third out.
They were going into extra innings. The next four innings went by quickly. It was starting to get dark and they couldn`t play anymore. They ended up postponing it until the next day. That night none of the players could sleep in excitement to continue playing tomorrow.
"This is the best game of my life," each kid told their parents when they got home that night.
The next day they resumed play at noon. They kept on playing until it once again was too dark to play. The players were exhausted. They had no other choice but to put an end to the game and call both teams co-champions.
It was truly the best little league game ever played.
