The Ailment
Born 1984, M, from Chandigarh, IndiaThe Ailment
“I am fed up with this daily routine of visiting doctors,” said Vincy in a depressed tone.
“But to get well we have to go to doctors, you can’t solely rely on a miracle from God,” replied Tanveer, Vincy’s brother.
“I will not go anywhere now. If God has destined some more years to live then no disease can snatch those years form me.”
“Your blind faith in God will one day hasten your death,” replied Tanveer in an angry tone and, slamming the door, left the room.
Vincy’s husband, Deepak, entered the room, and on seeing Vincy sobbing, he just hugged her and asked her to calm down.
It has been over two years of marriage between Vincy and Tanveer. They were not able to have a child. Both of them were in their early thirties. Then one day they decided to visit a gynecologist to ascertain the cause of their discomfort. So there started their ordeal, which is:
After consulting a lot of friends and relatives, it was decided to visit Dr. Anupama Sharma a leading Gynaecologist of their own city Delhi.
Vincy took a day off from the office and Deepak did the same. They took an appointment and reached her clinic at sharp 9:00 a.m. It was a huge clinic with two pretty receptionists and at least a staff of twenty persons running here and there.
After one hour of waiting, Dr. Anupama called them inside her room. Vincy stepped in and was stunned to see a doctor younger than her. She hesitated a little and saw straight into Deepak’s eyes probing, “Whether she should proceed to discuss all of their problems to such a young doctor or go back.”
Deepak understood his wife’s probing and gestured her to get in. They greeted the doctor and Vincy told the doctor about her problem. Dr. Anupama, after asking her routine questions, asked them to have an ultrasound done and come back with the report.
“And please get it done from my clinic only as I don’t trust reports of other clinics,” said Dr. Anupama gleefully.
“All right madam, I will.”
Vincy and Deepak got it done but were astonished to see that the rates were double had they gone to a government facility. Anyway, there was no option now. They paid the amount and the receptionist handed them over the ultrasound and the report.
The next day they again went to the doctor and handed the report to her. Dr. Anupama started to examine the ultrasound and the report.
“I am sorry to inform you but you have a cyst on the right side of your ovary,” said Dr. Anupama.
Vincy and Deepak were scared and asked in sync, “What should be done now?”
“Oh! Do not worry, I will write down some medicines, just take them and the cyst will vanquish in three months.”
Dr. Anupama wrote down the prescription and asked them to come after one week. Vincy started to take the medicines. It worsened her condition. She felt sleepy, giddy, restless, tired and there were sudden attacks of pain in her legs.
After four days of seeing her sister’s deplorable condition Tanveer said:
“Don’t take words of these private practitioners seriously. Just visit the government hospital, they are the best to guide you as they do not have any greed for money,” pronounced Tanveer.
Vincy agreed to it and the next day, with the help of an acquaintance, an appointment was secured at the local government hospital.
Vincy and Deepak reached the doctor’s room at 8:00 a.m. sharp. Vincy was terrified to watch such a huge rush waiting for the doctor. The famous doctor, Dr. Avinash Malhotra, was nowhere to be seen. There was no seat left for them to wait. Deepak asked the peon about the doctor and got a reply in a haughty tone, “He is in the operation theatre and will come by 10:00 a.m.” Deepak wondered how the peon was so precise about the end timing of the operation. He said nothing more and stood with Vincy waiting for the great Doctor.
Dr. Avinash, a tall, bespectacled man in his mid fifties, arrived at 10:30 a.m. He swiftly entered his room and asked the peon to send the patients one by one. The large crowd has swelled to double by then. After waiting for an hour and seeing no chance of meeting the great doctor. Deepak approached the peon and requested him to find a way to get them into the room soon.
The peon, a young dark boy in his early twenties, asked for 50 rupees to get early entry. Deepak was stunned at his audacity in full public view but on seeing the crowd handed fifty rupees note swiftly into the peon’s hand. The peon’s palm being greased he smiled and said, “Bring the patient, now is your turn.”
Deepak called Vincy and after five minutes, they were inside the room of the great doctor. It was a tiny room with only three chairs and a table fully occupied with the files of the doctor. The doctor occupied one chair and the other two placed opposite to him were for the patients. Dr. Avinash looked at them and asked them about the ailment.
Vincy showed him the report and ultrasound.
“So you have already visited a doctor and come to me. You might have heard of my fame. Anyway, let’s see what is in your report?” Dr. Avinash studied it and pronounced, “Madam you have a cyst on your right ovary and it is very bad. You need to get it operated on soon otherwise you will die.”
“But Dr. Anupama has said that the cyst is on the left side, and there is no need to worry and I can get treated by medicines only,” said Vincy looking straight into the eyes of Dr. Avinash.
“Then follow her advise madam and do not waste my time, it is very precious,” replied Dr. Avinash.
Vincy and Deepak were now on the horns of dilemma. Dr. Anupama had told them about the cyst on the left side and now this doctor had transferred it to the other side.
On seeing both of them confused, Dr. Avinash asked them to come whenever they have decided shat to do. He has other patients also to cater to so please leave. “And please only come here if you have full faith in my skills. I hate sceptics,” said Dr. Avinash with a grin.
Deepak and Vincy reached their home. The whole way they did not utter a single word. Tanveer was waiting for them at their home. On seeing their worried and terrified countenances, Tanveer called his parents. Soon they arrived. The clock ticked 2:00 p.m. Tanveer and her parents kept on asking Vincy, “What has happened, why are both of them so scared?”
“I do not want to die mother. The private doctor is saying there is no need to worry and the government doctor is asking us to get an operation done soon otherwise I will die. I do not know what I should do now?” said Vincy with tears streaming down from her eyes.
There was complete silence in the room and then Deepak said, “Enough of this imbecility Vincy. I think both of these doctors are of no use. We will go tomorrow to Mumbai to meet Dr. Aarushi Dogra. She is a world-renowned gynecologist. I had thought earlier of going to her but on meeting Dr. Anupama, I thought there is no need to worry. But I think it has become serious and so we will go tomorrow to Mumbai.”
Deepak called the travel agent and booked two air tickets for Mumbai. He too called at Dr. Aarushi’s clinic and got an emergency appointment by paying 3000 rupees. The next day they reached, worried and tensed, at Dr. Aarushi’s clinic. It was a big clinic so it may be more appropriate to call it a hospital with full-fledged arrangements.
After waiting for half an hour. They entered the room of the Doctor. It was a spacious room with two assistant doctors surrounding Dr. Aarushi, who seemed to be in her mid sixties. Vincy handed over the report to Dr. Aarushi who signalled her to hand it over to one of her assistants. The assistant doctor, in her mid twenties, started to read the report and discussed it with Dr. Aarushi. The whole scene looked like they had come to a queen for mercy for a crime.
After waiting anxiously for fifteen minutes came the reply from the assistant.
“Madam you need the get the ultrasound done form our clinic. We do not rely on other clinic’s reports. Vincy wanted to slap the assistant and ask her, “Then what the hell was she discussing with her arrogant doctor boss?” You have not uttered a single syllable to her till now.
Deepak, sensing his wife’s anger, hurriedly said, “OK! Doctor we will get it done now. Thank you.” And they came out of the room.
“I think we should return back to Delhi. All of these private clinics have become money-minting machines. They want to fill their coffers and nothing more,” said Vincy.
“I know Vincy, but she is really a reputed doctor and I request you to get the test done.”
Vincy agreed and they proceeded towards the lab. They got the test done and had to pay 2000 rupees for a test of 500 rupees. To add further to their woes they were asked to pay 250 more as report charges, taking the total to 2250 rupees.
None of them protested as they were too tried from all of the mental agony. At around 5:00 p.m they got the chance to meet Dr. Aarushi. Again, the assistant studied the report and after discussing it with Dr. Aarushi said, “Madam you have no problem in your ovary as told to you by your previous doctors. I will prescribe you some medicine, just take it and you will feel better. You need to get some more tests to reach the root cause of your not being able to conceive.”
Deepak and Vincy started to collect all of their documents, without saying anything, without taking the prescription; they got out of the clinic, took a taxi for the airport, and took the first flight back to Delhi. On reaching home Vincy cooked dinner. Both of them relished the dinner and talked a lot about their happy life without either of them discussing the ailment.
In the morning around 11:00 a.m, Tanveer came to their house. On being asked about the trip to Mumbai, Vincy replied:
“Dear brother I think it is best for me now to think nothing about the child and live my life. I have a big house, a big car, and above all a loving and caring husband. I will not go to any doctor now and will live a happy and contended life believing in the power of God, having full faith in God. Some miracle will definitely happen and I will have a baby soon.”
After one year, Vincy was blessed with a healthy son, leaving all of them to wonder about the events one year back. Especially leaving Tanveer dumbstruck about this miracle, which vanished the ailment if there was any.
