Unlike All Those Other Days

"Hey Andy," Marlene greeted her ex with a smile trying to hide how much she was truly worried about how their conversation would go.

"I don't have anything to say to you," Andy replied with a grimace and a look in his eyes that seemed almost threatening, but he stayed this time. His gesture of not moving away from her gave Marlene some small hope mainly because he hardly ever spoke back, much less stayed.

"Why do you keep trying to talk to me? We broke up a month ago."

"Oh, well I know that, but we used to talk all the time after school and I-"

"Quit it! Just quit trying to talk to me like you care about me! You don't! I know you don't! You went out with one of my friends as soon as we broke up! You don't give a shit about me! We were just there to so you wouldn't be bored!" Andy screamed causing everybody to stop their jokes and laughs in turn to stare. Andy noticed this and felt his face and neck grow hot from the embarrassment from the looks they were receiving

"Andy I did care! I still do! The only reason I broke up with you was because I thought you'd want someone else. And that you deserved someone way better than me, I didn't think you'd hate me so much..." Marlene was on the verge of tears and you could hear it in her trembling voice. "Andy I- I didn't just go out with you because I was bored. I loved yo-"

"Shut up!" In all his rage Andy had slapped Marlene. After realizing what he'd done he turned to look at the girl he loved, the girl who'd broken his heart, the girl he wanted most even if he could've chose to go out with any other girl he wanted without thinking twice about his decision. "Marlene, I'm so sorry. I don't know why I did that. Babe please forgive me."

"No, no. It's alright. I understand. I think I should leave though, to be sure I don't bother you anymore than I already have. Excuse me," Marlene stood up and walked away with her head down and tears streaming down her face. She could taste her blood in her mouth. She decided to go inside the school's bathroom so she could clean herself. She could hear Andy trying to call her, some others along with him. To her it was all the same, it was just mumbling to her ears and decided to keep walking. Besides she didn't want him to feel guilty from the sight of her tears.

"Hey Marlene?" Marlene turned to face her best friend, Isabelle.

"Oh, Isabelle! He's mad at me and he hates me! It's all my fault!" Marlene ran towards her friend burying her face in her shoulder and soft long hair she always wore down.

"Honey, no he doesn't hate you. He just puts his guard up around you. He doesn't know how to talk around you or even ACT with you near him. He's a wreck, you have him so love struck."

"And it's because of me that he's that way. I don't blame him for slapping me," Marlene retorted as she regretted everything she'd made him go through.

"No, don't say that. Hun...oh I don't know what to say, but you didn't make him that way. Nothing is anybody's fault. Especially not yours! Everybody is responsible for their own actions," It was true Isabelle didn't know what to say to her friend in dire need even if she was her BEST friend. But any and all consolation she could provide she'd give her every ounce of it.

Marlene felt her phone vibrate in the right pocket of her hoodie. She reached in her pocket to pull it out, it was her mother was calling her. That meant that her ride was there and she'd to leave immediately.

"Oh, I'm so sorry Isabelle. But I have to leave now, my ride's here. Thank you for the advice." Marlene answered her phone but shined a smile that showed how grateful she felt towards her friend...unfortunately her eyes still shone with a sad tinge in them. Isabelle admired how her friend's eyes sparkled even when she was hurting. And with that, Marlene gave her friend a hug and walked out of the bathroom. Leaving for the weekend trying to avoiding seeing Andy or catching Andy's eye for fear she'd burst into tears as she had before. She quickly spotted her car walked towards it and climbed into the familiar car. Today had been unlike all those other days. At least today she'd gotten to speak to Andy...maybe she would try it again another day.
