True Friend
Born 1981, F, from Hamilton, CanadaTammy and I met at Starbucks on Levi Street one Sunday afternoon. When I accidentally bumped into her and I spilled my coffee on myself. Then she asked “Are you ok.” “Yes I am ok, thank you, sorry for spilling some of my coffee on you.” I replied. Then she said, “No problem.” Instead of getting upset she invited me to join her table. She looks so friendly that I did not refuse and found myself making small talk with her. Then finally we introduced ourselves.
After we had coffee Tammy and I traded phone numbers. She asked if I was doing anything later tonight I replied “no not really why?” She replied “I would like you to meet my family” I said “sure.” I went home took a shower and had something to eat. I called Tammy and told her I was on my way.
I rang the doorbell. I was scared and shy to meet her family. She answered and she introduced me to her two brothers and her sister and her mom and dad. I shook everybody’s hand sat down and had something to drink and talked for a bit. I started to feel a little more comfortable with them. Tammy and I decided to leave and go out for coffee back at Starbucks where we had met.
The next morning Tammy called me and she said her family wanted to meet my family I said, “Sure why not”. I called my family over for dinner so they could meet Tammy and her family. After dinner they sat down on the couch, had coffee and talked for a bit then they left. Tammy called me that night and said that her family really enjoyed the company.
Tammy called me the next morning she was crying, I asked her if she was ok, she said “My brother was in an accident he is in the hospital.” I hang up the phone and rushed over to their house and gave Tammy a ride to the hospital. We went into her brother’s room where we saw him lying pale on his hospital bed but the nurse informed everyone that he is going to be ok. But still needs to stay for a bit longer. Tammy gave me a hug then said, “Thank you for being here for me.”
Days, months and years have passed and still we remained friends. One day I was over at Tammy’s place when my mom called and asked to talk to me. I picked up the phone and mom said “Dad fell down and had a heart attack meet me at the hospital.” I felt my heart pounding so fast as Tammy and I rushed to the hospital, praying for my Dad’s condition. But it was too late. My Dad did not make it in time. By then I was still in a state in shock. I could not believe what is happening. Dad was so well and healthy when I last saw him. And now this.
Tammy helped to arrange everything. Mom and I are still upset and not stable to do things. So Tammy took charge. Tammy made the funeral arrangements while mom and I did the painful task of choosing the clothes he is to wear. For more then a year Tammy and I became real good friends. We have a lot in common and enjoyed each others company. Until one day that friendship was broken. As we often did.
Tammy and I arranged to meet at our favourite pizza shop called Kelsey’s place located at Kelsey Avenue. It was a nice spring day, it was sunny and Tammy was already there waiting when I arrived but she was not alone. A guy whom we saw a few times in campus was there talking to her. I was surprised because Tammy knew that Jacob, that’s the guy’s name has been my crush since we saw him at school. Tammy and Jacob were laughing together and then they both saw me coming but Jacob had to leave.
As soon as I got to Tammy she was smiling like she never smiled before. She said to me “You remember Jacob, well he just asked me out for this Saturday.” I responded back and said “oh” I had a fake smile and said “That’s good I’m happy for you both.” We went inside to the pizza place and I ordered one slice of pizza and I said to her that I wasn’t feeling well and I went home.
The same night Tammy called me but I never answered the phone. She left a message asking if I was feeling better. I never called her back. She kept on calling me but until one day I really got mad and stood up to her and said “You know what? You knew I liked Jacob and went behind my back and asked him out how could you?” She responded back to me and said “Well you never made your move you had all this time to do it but you’re scared.” Then I said “Well if you want it that way then go ahead and go out with him but remember if he breaks your heart don’t come running to me.” Tammy responded and said “Oh don’t worry I’m going to make him happy.”
I looked at her and gave her a shoulder lift and walked away. Tammy called a few weeks later. I said “mom hang up the phone don’t talk to her.” So I guess mom pretended to hang up and she walked into the other room and she told Tammy to come over. Tammy came over but I was upstairs had my music on so I never hear nothing. A few moments later I hear a knock on my door, mom opened up the door and said “You have company” I said “who is it?” And who pops their head around the corner it was Tammy I went red because I was mad and I told my mom I never want to see her.
Mom said “Please listen to her she has something to say to you.” So of course I had no choice to let her in. Tammy started to talk and said to me “I remembered when you said to me when you break up with Jacob never come to you.” I said “Yes and that’s why your hear forget it get out.” She said “No listen to me for one second please I need someone to talk to.” “The reason why I broke up with him is because I felt guilty and I knew you liked him so I suggested that maybe you should go out with Jacob.” I asked her if she broke up with him and she said “Yes because I can’t lose a best and a true friend like you.” Tammy stood up from my bed came over to me and gave me a hug and we both said “Friends Forever.” Now Tammy and I were friends again.
Tammy suggested that we go to the mall and walked around for a bit then sat down for something drink. After the mall I dropped off Tammy at home. I went home then three hours later Jacob phoned and I was speechless but I talked to him for a little while and he said “would you like to go out on Friday night at a restaurant called Starlight on Velvet Street at eight o’clock.” I said “Sure Jacob I would love too.” We said good bye and hung up. Friday came so quickly I was so nervous. The time was eight o’clock and he was on time he rang the door bell and I answered it opened the door and we both looked at each other and smiled. I got into his car and drove off to the Starlight restaurant. We arrived and went inside and got our table and we sat down.
Jacob and I started to talk and I said to him “This is a nice restaurant.” He said “Yes it is.” We ordered food and then Jacob and I started to talk again he said “I have a cousin his name is Lucas and I haven’t seen him for a long time and we recently found each other.” My mouth just dropped and I said to him “Well maybe we should hook Tammy and Lucas together.” He said “Yes I was thinking about the same thing.” Then we both laughed. After dinner we left the restaurant he drove me home and I said “Thank you for the lovely evening call me later.” He said “You are very welcome it was my pleasure.”
I got inside the house and I called Tammy up and I said to her “I got good news for you” she said “What is it?” I said “Jacob has a cousin and his name is Lucas and Jacob is calling Lucas tonight and maybe you too can meet tomorrow.” She was so happy and she said “Sure I would love to meet Lucas.” Tammy and I hung up the phone and I watched some T.V. and went to sleep.
The next morning Jacob called and said “I was talking to Lucas last night and he agreed to meet Tammy” I said “Ok so we will meet you two at Starbucks.” Tammy and I went to Starbucks and Lucas and Jacob was sitting at the table and Jacob introduced Lucas to Tammy and I.
At first glance the nice blue eyes of Lucas did not escape Tammy’s affection. Lucas has always been attracted to blondes and Tammy’s natural blonde curls really made him fall at first sight. Tammy and Lucas were talking to know each other a little bit more. Two hours in the coffee shop we all left as a happy couple.
