The Heartless Winter

Screams. Blood. Tears. I was dazed. What was happening? Then i black out. I woke up again. It was cold. I couldn't move. All i could hear was screams. Then it struck me like a bell in my head. I'm in my car. Did i have an accident? I black out again.

The next thing i noticed when i woke up was the distant sound of sirens. I literally scream at the top of my lungs desperately to get out, like a bird in a cage. I was stuck. The pinching pain and the horror of me not walking again, or maybe the coldness could kill me. Thinking of it made me feel numb inside and my stomach churned. I turned, a glimse of orange caught my eyes and the smell of burning flesh caught me by the nose. I'm burning alive i thought. Then a soothing voice hit me. "I will get you out, you will be okay". I felt the car rolling as the man lifted the car. He forced my door open and dragged me out.

When the emergency services came. The paramedics strapped me down. They said that i had multiple broken bones and burns. That i was also lucky to be alive. Then i heard an explosion. ii was a huge boom like a bomb. That's when i was loaded into the ambulance.

The next few days i was in a coma. When i woke up a few days after in ICU a doctor came in. He told me that i was in an accident and i had many surgeries. I was a bit uncomfortable. My parents were at my side. In the next few days i started moving and talking more. I was sent to rehab. Basically i relearned everything from changing clothes to eating.

After so many long months i finally came home. Winter came and winter went. I never knew my hero. When one day a knock came to the door. It was a police officer. I opened the door, "hi, how can i, uh, help you?".

"Are you Karen Woods?" he said.

"Yessss" i exclaimed. "You can come in".

I showed the cop the way to the living room. He sat down with an expression of sadness. "I would like to tell you something, can you just please sit down". I went to sit on the warm cosy couch. "I want to tell you about that car accident those many months ago, your hero, old man Charles, died as a result. he gave up his life to save you. He got blasted in the fire, his burn was so severe he died from blood loss and infection".

"That's so sad. i have always wanted to thank him".

"Okay that's it, i have to leave now". I showed the cop to the door. I just stand there looking at the dark gray stormy sky. Thinking of my hero. "I hope he finds peace and lives a nice afterlife. thank you for saving me".

The wind blew past me and i caught a small whisper "It was my time to die. you don't need to feel sorry, i'm living a great life here. hope to see you again". I shut the door and stood there crying for what seemed like days.
