The Ant World
By: Anuki Fernando
Now there lived in the ant colony a very kind, active ant. His name was Bern. He was a black ant and was a hard worker. One morning, he woke up from bed. ‘Another day to start’, Bern told himself. Bern wore his six bright blue shoes, had some sugar for breakfast and went out of his cave.
‘Hello Bern’, shouted Cal, the baby ant. Cal’s wings were growing and he was able to fly around a bit. ‘Hello Cal’, Bern shouted too. Bern was greeted by all his ant friends as he made his way to the line where the worker ants were. Then they all set off, to do work. Bern went in search of grain, carrying a brown weaved basket.
‘Hi Bern’, a voice squeaked. ‘Hi Cal, Hi Tov’, Bern said. Cal’s brother couldn’t fly yet like Cal, so he walked behind Bern. Cal could only fly for a few minutes, and then he had to rest.
‘We’re helping you’, said Tov. ‘Yes, we are gonna try it out’, said Cal. ‘You kids are still small’, Bern said. ‘No, we’re big enough’, Cal said. He was very proud of himself and often got into trouble for doing things he was not meant to do.
Bern, Cal and Tov found some grain by a big tree. They collected it and put it in Bern’s basket. ‘Good morning, Bern’, chirped a bird, swooping down to meet him. ‘Good morning, Geli’, Bern said.
All the small insects around were very good friends with Bern and the other ants. There was Gibet, the caterpillar; Reel, the ladybird; Shell, Butter and Coco, the butterflies; Bead and Sproon, the worms; Ruck, the grasshopper; and the fireflies, Bit and Lock.
As Bern and the two small ants were walking further for grains, they saw all their friends gathered together. The three ants ran only to find Gibet the caterpillar in a cocoon. ‘What happened?’, Tov asked. ‘Gibet’s turning into one of us’, replied Coco the butterfly. Bern, Tov, Cal and all their friends stood patiently watching the cocoon hanging on a low branch. Even Geli the bird joined them; she had never inspected a caterpillar turn into a butterfly so closely.
All of a sudden wings appeared out of the cocoon, and then appeared a beautiful butterfly. ‘Gibet!’, exclaimed all the insects. ‘Hi guys’, shouted Gibet, flying around, ‘Aren’t I beautiful?’, he asked proudly. ‘Come down Gibet, you’re one of us’, Shell said.
‘Goodbye’, Bern waved, ‘I’ve got to get on with my work’. ‘Goodbye’, waved the insects. Bern walked and he came across Bert, one of the worker ants who was supposed to be building the colony.
‘Hey, Bert’, Bern said, ‘What’s wrong?’. ‘I hurt my foot but I’ll be okay after some time’, Bert replied. ‘Alright then, we’re off’, waved Bern.
‘I'm tired Bern’, Tov said. ‘Shall we go home?’, Cal asked. So the three ants set off back to the colony, collecting grain on the way.
The queen’s daughter, Med, came to meet her brothers. ‘There’s enough sugar and grain to last us all a week’, she laughed.
But what happened was, grain and sugar became scarce. There was not enough for the ants to eat. The queen became more worried by the minute.
One day Bern made a decision, so he went to speak to the queen, Jasmine.
‘Yes, Bern?’, the queen ant asked. ‘Please, your highness, the food is going down’, Bern replied kneeling. ‘I know Bern’, the queen replied sighing, ‘It’s difficult for the ants to find food. So what brought you here?’. ‘I will not be at the colony for some days’, replied Bern, ‘I have to find a source of food for all of us’.
‘That’s a very clever idea Bern’, replied the queen, ‘Be safe’. ‘Thank you, your highness’, replied Bern leaving the queen’s room.
Bern departed the same day, all the ants bid farewell and told Bern to be safe. The queen was looking out from her window high above and smiling.
It was a rainy day and Bern’s friends weren’t there to be seen. Not even Geli. Bern took a leaf as an umbrella against the rain, walking along the path.
It was difficult for him to walk steadily as he had to hold the umbrella in two hands, while he held the basket with the other two.
At last Bern saw a huge mansion and he began running. He was sure, there was a huge supply of food there, but Bern stopped at once.
There was a river in front. It wasn’t exactly a river but a puddle. It was a small puddle for a human but a huge river for a small ant like Bern.
Bern could not go around the puddle, so what he did was, he dragged a huge leaf and floated it on the water. Then he found a small stick as an oar. Bern took out his leaf umbrella and basket and put them onto the big leaf and then he climbed on too.
Bern steered the leaf to the left, then to the right and then forward.
After hard work of steering the boat, he reached the other side of the puddle. Bern arrived at the mansion and climbed in through the window. He saw the sugar jar open and began filling his basket to the brim.
Once Bern had filled the basket he carried it. It was so heavy and Bern almost fell. Then he heard chuckling and looked up to see Geli standing on the window sill.
‘Hi Geli’, Bern waved, ‘Food is scarce, the ants have nothing to eat. Could you take me back to the colony?’.
‘With pleasure’, Geli replied. Geli helped Bern climb onto her back and balance the basket of sugar, then she took off.
After minutes of flying, Geli arrived at the colony. She was greeted by all the ants and they all were happy to see Bern safe.
The basket of sugar Bern had brought was not enough for the whole colony.
The queen suggested Geli to take a number of ants back to the mansion and bring them back with sugar.
Bern was the hero. He helped them find food, when all the ants were almost dying. The queen rewarded Bern with a crown made by special stuff for his bravery.
