Bittersweet.
It only seemed like yesterday, even though it was many years ago. Sheila had fallen for him on first sight, but so had her best friend Jean. Needs must so she’d left the scene to powder her nose in the ladies but on return any hope owned was dashed at the sight of Jean dancing cheek to cheek with the handsome stranger. Envy had no place in the deep rooted friendship, so when the dance ended and Jean rushed over to introduce Bruce all she could do was smile in reply. Years didn’t dampen emotions of the heart, and all Shelia could do was watch the couple grow and flourish into one another. There was never going to be another for her and she continued to nurse the loss of something shed never have, but wanted so much. The twinkle in his enchanting blue eyes touched her world from a far and always would. The day arrived as all days do and one of the triangle had to leave one world to enter another. Even though it would have been much more convenient for Sheila to go first it was Jean. They’d all aged with the passage of time and she’d suffered more than most, so in the end it was a blessing to see the restfulness gained. The hospital room held a profound silence as Bruce held a lifeless hand tightly while Sheila sat heartbroken at the other side of her dear friend. After a long painful period the love of her life lifted his head and directed his beautiful eyes her way. Her heart couldn’t help but flutter, but it didn’t last long. His words lifted her to the highest height for not more than a second and left nothing more to say, “Sheila you were my first choice, but thankfully I fell deeply in love with my second.”
