Born 1992, F, from Kuala Lumpur, MalaysiaI can still remember everything that happened that day all so clearly. A living nightmare, that's what i would call it. Well, maybe I am over exaggerating, it's probably something extremely simple, but I will never forget that day.
It's been almost 2 months already since Shawn and I had got together. No one in school knew about it. We kept it extremely quiet. Not even my close friends or his knew. It was just between us. Then, the cat got out of the bag that dreadful day in April. It's actually very stupid when you come to think about it.
There was this trip organised by the Science society of my school for all the form 5 students to visit a certain university. It was to give us a clearer understanding about what things were going to be like once we have left school and entered the university. I decided to join, not because I wanted to increase my knowledge or whatsoever, no, no.. The only reason i joined this trip was because I got to miss classes that day and because Shawn was going too.
Shawn and I had two good friends. My best friend, Lisa, and Shawn's best friend Mark, were also in a relationship. The both of them had been together for nearly a year or so. So, Shawn and i sat together in the bus with a reason that Lisa and Mark wanted to be together. During the trip to the university, everything was normal, Shawn and I spoke alot. I realised that Shawn was pretty shy compared to me. He kept looking out of the window. However, being me, I could not keep queit, so I kept talking and finding topics to keep the conversation going.
Finally we arrived, and we all got down from the bus and went for the trip together. It was all pretty boring but, being able to spend that little amount of time with Shawn meant the world to me. Because Shawn and I don't exactly show that we're together. He's always on his side of the world in his class and me on my side of the world in my class. We hardly talk in school. It's the every night text messages that have kept us going all this while. SO to be able to spend this little time with him was good enough, and we had a good reason too. Lisa and Mark wanted to be together, so, Shawn and I are stuck with each other.
After the tour, the boring lecture, and the uninteresting lunch, it was time to head home. We got into the bus together and like before Shawn and I sat beside each other while Lisa and Mark sat together. While we were on our way back we spoke very little. I decided to keep quiet for once and just watch what Shawn would do. I could see he was uneasy with the situation and so was I, but I decided to just watch how far this goes. In the end, he broke the ice, and we were talking as normal. Then while talking I placed my hand onto his explaining something. After a while he grabbed my hand and pulled it to his side. That moment was, amazing. My emotions were running crazy. His touch meant so much to me. He stroked my hand with his fingers gently and finally he placed his fingers in between mine and we were holding hands. At that moment, Shawn didn't even look at me. He was looking out of the window at the road watching the cars pass by. Not even a word was uttered and yet I felt like so much was being said. He kept stroking my hand with his other one gently and I even caught a glimpse of him closing his eyes while he was holding my hand.
Now, the entire group of students that joined this trip was extremely curious of the sudden change in me and Shawn. Although we said that we were hanging out together because Lisa and Mark wanted to be together, they found it hard to believe. During the trip back suddenly one of the kids at the back peeked over the chair just to check on me and Shawn. Luckily Shawn released my hand for a while at that time because he had to reply a text message, so we got away. Then again Shawn slowly pulled my hand to his side and placed his fingers in between mine and we were holding hands. Then, Suddenly again, the kid at the back peeked over to check on the both of us. Before the both of us could do anything, he had already seen the both of our hands grasping onto each others. Immediately we released each others hands but, it was too late. That kid shouted loudly in the bus, "they're holding hands!! Shawn and Chello are holding hands!" One by one all the kids in the bus stood up and turned to face us. Shawn was smiling from east to west, and so was I. What could we do?
The whole bus was in uproar. Everyone was pointing and looking at us. I was speechless, and embarassed. I know Shawn felt the same way too. I could see it in his eyes. At that very moment I wished the earth could open and just swallow me up. My face was as red as beetroot. Then all the kids in the bus started singing "Happy Birthday" to the both of us. It was a kind of thing they do when they find out about a new couple. Everyone was cheering us! i still felt embarassed. I felt like burying my head in Shawn's chest but that would just make matters worst, so I held myself.
Finally the whole uproar died down and everyone sat back in their places. Thank God the teachers did not understand what the whole commotion was all about. Shawn dared not hold my hand after that, that day. When we reached school, i just gave him a short 'bye' and walked off with Lisa. Lisa was going on telling me that she had suspected the both of us for a long time already and she was happy for us.
By the next day in school, the news had spread like wildfire. Everywhere I went I was known as Shawn's girlfriend. People in school would walk up to Shawn and just congratulate him for no reason. at first I tried to stop them, but when I realised there was nothing I could do I just felt so bad. Then Shawn told me, "Why are you shy? Don't worry, it's not like they don't have girlfriends or boyfriends, right? If we can't stop them, join them. Just act normal Chello. It'll all die off soon." So that's exactly what we did. In the end people got bored and just as Shawn had said, it died off. However, that is one experience I am positive I will never forget. What an embarassment.
