Growing up happens in a heartbeat. One day you're in diapers, the next day you're gone. But the memories of your youth stay with you for the long haul. I remember a place, a town, a house, like a lot of houses. A yard like a lot of other yards. On a street like a lot of other streets. And the thing is, after all these years, I still look back...with wonder.
“Tock…” we all heard a clear sound of a magnificent stroke with which my friend Gaurav hit the ball on his leg-side of our School grounds. It was quite a sunny day and the sun was nearly too bright on 31st December. We had to admit that Global Warming had begun to give its horrific effects. For a moment we couldn’t see where the ball was heading towards, but then we heard a shrill noise of glass breaking, and we realized what had happened and what we would have to face later on.
The player’s of the other team had gathered near us, it was 4 in the evening, and we had badly lost to them in a match of 3-0 series. They were happy for they had beaten us also for 3 golden-yellow notes of 500 bucks. My friend took out the money, gave it to them and said with a wicked smile on his face, “I bet we will spend twice the money you have won on the party tonight.” I looked at him inquisitively for what he had said. I didn’t understand what he was up to. His father neither had ALLADIN’s LAMP nor a GOLDEN EGG LAYING HEN. Neither could he rob nor could he commit black-market business. It was really unusual for a tenth-grader like him, like us who live in a small town which neither had its own mall nor a Multiplex, to have that much money! He might really have dug in Alibaba’s cave or hit some jackpot, because for the last month he had been spending money like water. We turned our backs to them and took our cycles for returning home. We really had sad faces, not because we had badly lost, but due to the reason of how we were going to face our parents when we reached our homes, since we hadn’t informed them that we were staying back at school for the match. Blimey, how could we have told them that we were going to play a silly Cricket match at school, when the prelim exams were just 2 days away! Which parent would understand that love of ours toward Cricket?
4:30, I reached my home. My mother had a stroke quite a month ago, and so she was at home rather than her office waiting eagerly for me. “I TELL NO LIE”, that was my policy at home. I told her everything but she just said, “Do I need explanation from my only son? no! Go now and have your lunch; you might be hungry and tired!” Well really, mothers are always so good at heart, but it was not the thing in everybody’s houses. The love of my friend’s mother’s on their pretty arrogant 16 year old sons was not less, but they were just a little bit strict. I came to know about it for almost all my other friends had a beating of cane from their mothers when they had returned home.
We had gathered for our meetings at evening, the sun had set and so had our faces, since we were appreciating how we had screwed ourselves at home. “It’s the 31’st guys; we must have a bang tonight! What do you think?” I tried to make their mood cheerful, but Alas! One of them said, “You filthy lucky bastard! You had good luck at your home, doesn’t mean we could get the same. Just tell me How on the earth are we going to explain that to our parent’s; hey MOM and DAD, sorry for the noon but can we go out for tonight’s party? Man, they didn’t trust even for a second when I told them we were studying for extra time in schools!” “SAME HERE!” all of them exclaimed in unison.
Just then an idea struck in one of my friends mind, and turning to me he said, “You, yeah only you, can get all of us for the party. Look, only you can lie fearlessly on our parent’s dumb faces and they do believe you quite well!” I was shocked for a second for what he had come up with. I replied instantly, ”What am I? A lamb for slaughter? What if they caught the lie? How the hell will I escape from them then?” My friend’s faces were saddened. Just then I announced, “Okay I will do it, but first off you all go to your homes and don’t tell them a thing. I will come to each of yours home and we’ll try to prevaricate them!” All of them were full of happiness and ran back to their homes, and I went to begin my first mission with Rohan’s house. His mother was watering the plants in their small garden.
I went to her and said, “Hello Aunty, sorry we had forgot to tell you that we were going to wait in school. Actually it was my idea, to impress the new Science teacher by doing extra tests….”
Bah!!...my lie was interrupted by her, “But Rohan said that you were doing Computer assignments,” she retorted with a weird look on her face.
I suddenly said, ”That’s only COMPUTER SCIENCE’s Assignment,”
“Ahh!” she said, ”Ok then, so what you wanted to say further?”
Yeah, I had tried to satisfy her with that filthy failed lie of mine. I said, “Aunty, look, it's the 31st and this is our last year together, so can Rohan also come along with us to celebrate out for a dinner’s party?”
She gave a look at her son, who was standing at a corner of his house’s door with that pretty innocent look, and then nodded giving us the signal that he could come. “Yippee!” I exclaimed in my mind, we had succeeded with our first prey, now nine to go.
Well I don’t know why but even GOD might have enjoyed the LIAR-LIAR show going on here down in my little town, even he might have given a jolt of laughter. I don’t know why but he might have wanted to be fair, so he made my lie caught at one of my friend’s house. At the house of this friend of mine I had guaranteed his mother that a particular friend of mine would be coming, even though I had doubt of his coming. This friend’s mother used to have a secure feeling if her son Ajinkya were to be with this friend of mine called Siddhesh. Just only when we were leaving out for that big party, Ajinkya’s mother gave a call at Siddhesh’s house, and came to know that he was not going to come. The moment I had feared had arrived, but it was my luck that his mother took it lightly and said, ”Look, it was not good for you to lie to me. I would have send him anyway. Just don’t do it again, for we trust you.” I bent my face down looking at the ground and silently said, ”Sorry Aunty.” Actually I wanted to say that, after all, it was your son’s idea, but didn’t say it. We left silently, and on the turn down the next lane, we burst out with laughter. after all, we were all young stupid adolescents.
We reached the venue on time, and then tried to call at Siddhesh’s house to ask whether he was coming or not. Then came YES from the other side of the receiver. I replied abruptly, ”You SON OF A… if only your parent’s would have agreed half an hour ago, my lie wouldn’t have been caught. Now come fast here, we are waiting for you!”
We all arrived at this RESTAURANT of ours, which was the only classic in our town. We chatted a lot, cried on our past memoirs of school life. We realized that from now on LIFE WASN’T GOING TO REMAIN THE SAME AFTER A FEW MONTHS. Then came the moment for the end of our party. With a glass of cold-drinks in their hands, they raised a toast in my name, for due to me they were all here. I was happy, but with a gulp of my first sip I said facing to all of them that, “NEVER EVER MAKE ME LIE TO YOUR PARENT’S AGAIN!” They just said in unison, “NEVER EVER!”
The party ended, and we all knew that this particular incident was going to be in our minds for long long years to come. Even I was going to remember it, for I had committed sins of ten lies at ten different homes. Even I was laughing at myself, coz I had realized from my lies that I was at ten different places with ten different friends at the same time. It really did sound crazy, but after all what was a friend like me for?....Then before reaching home I asked for the bill, and was amazed that we had spent thrice the amount we had lost in the match today!
