Losing Friends
Born 2000, F, from Texas, United StatesThe bitter wind blew roughly against my cheek and I winced. Autumn leaves swirled and danced. Some landed in my hair. I was walking to my new school. Again, I thought to myself. But this school was awesome. I had been here in first grade and now I was returning in fourth grade. The school had a really big swimming pool, two libraries, three auditoriums and tons of cool stuff. I wondered if I would see any of my old friends there. As I entered the school gates, I spotted someone familiar, with brown frizzy hair and sparkling hazel eyes. It was Olivia, my best friend in first grade! Excited, I tried to get her attention, but Olivia didn’t notice at all. Oh well, I thought hopefully. Maybe I’ll see her at recess.
When recess finally came, I raced to the playground swings. The last time, Olivia had told me that she loved swings. Sure enough, she was there with a couple of friends, chatting and giggling. “Hey, Olivia! Remember me?” I said, grinning.
Olivia stared at me like I was mental. “Who are you?”
I stood there, stunned, my smile completely wiped out from my face. “I just moved back here with my family. We were best friends in first grade…”
“Umm, I don’t remember any of that. Well, if you say so, wanna play tag with us? The game’s called ‘Flush the Toilet’, we created our own version,” Olivia shrugged. I agreed, but when the game started, I couldn’t catch any of the girls and Olivia just sniggered at me. I couldn’t believe how much she’d changed. She had completely forgotten about me and replaced other people in her life!
Then, it dawned on me. Olivia’s family was filthy rich. Their house was a condominium and they even had a private swimming pool. Since first grade, Olivia had her own room with her own computer and everything. She didn’t need a childish loser like me to be her friend. She took friends for granted.
I slipped to the school river and sat on the river bank. I held back tears as memories of Olivia and me having fun together flashed through my mind. As I walked back to class, I looked back at Olivia again. When I turned around, I felt as if part of my soul had left me and went to follow Olivia.
