The Necklace

By Amanda
Born 1999, F, from Pennsylvania, United States
View Author Profile

Everything started that friday night when my grandmother died. My entire family was gathered around her bed, when she asked to speak to me alone. My family respected her wish and left. Once everyone was gone, she looked me straight in the eye.
"Amanda," her voice come out in a forced whisper. "The fate of the world lies in your hands."
I was shocked. I knew that I was changing. Something was happening to me. Just yesterday I tripped the school bully just by thinking about it. But to know that the entire world depended on me, that was something entirely new.
"Grandma...." I started.
"Hush child," my grandmother interrupted. "You must listen to me. Find Devion, he will help you. The forces of evil are stirring and only you have the power to stop them."
Breathing started to get harder and harder for her. I gripped her hand tighter while tears sprung to my eyes.
She took one final breath.
"The necklace will help." As she spoke those last words, I backed away slowly, knowing that she was dead. My family came and comforted me, then took me home.

That night, I had the strangest dream. I was observing a conversation between two monster-like creatures. The first was red with super-sharp talons and yellow eyes. It had a tail with scales, and wings on it's back. The second creature looked like a ghost, or a hologram of some sort. It was about 10 feet tall with two horns on either side of it's head.
I listened in on the conversation.
"The girl must not know who she really is," the smaller one insisted. "She will destroy us all, and our plan will fail."
The taller creature nodded thoughtfully.
"She will be a danger to us if she reaches full power." it added.
"We must get rid of her. We must hunt her down."
With a start, I realized that they were talking about me.
The taller creature made eye conatct with me, then snarled, as if noticing for the first time that I was there. It suddenly lunged at me with talons flailing.

I woke up with a start, drenched in sweat. "If they were really talking about me, then what is this power?" I thought. My mind traveled back to when my grandma died. She had mentioned a necklace. About 2 months ago, she had given me this leather necklace with a circular pendant. On it, was a version of a cross in the middle with some other language surrounding it.

At school that day, I scanned the image of the pendant into the computer, then googled it. I came across something about ancient Templar knights and King Arthur. Apparently, there was an old story about Templar knights. They were all very powerful and had some sort of power. King Arthur was one of them. When I tried to research further, a notice popped up on my computer:
Who are you? Why are researching about the Templar knights?
I heard about that before. People can monitor a webpage and ask people who are snooping around in it what they're doing.
I responded:
Who are you?
The response I got was:
Devion. Now who are you!?
I froze. On the day my grandma died, she had said something about finding Devion. I carefully started typing a response.
Alita's granddaughter.
Alita was my grandmother's name. I hoped that the dude would recognize it.
I immediately got a response back:
Meet me at the corner of Chestnut and Amy street at 7:00pm tonight.
I thought of what to do. Obviously, this guy knew my grandma, but meeting him went against everything any adult had ever taught me.
I made up my mind. I was going to sneak out tonight and meet this mysterious man.
