STAY STRONG

By Kiel Ong
Born 1999, M, from Brownsville, texas, United States
View Author Profile

Once there was a man named Kevin James. He went to the University of California Los Angeles. He was a very great basketball player who played for Division I in basketball. He always made the all-star team and was always the star player of the team. But one day, him and his friends went to Johny Carinos. But, when he was driving, something tragic happened.

As he was driving, he ran a stop light and a car crashed straight at him at his side. His friends were not injured and Gilbert made it alive, but was seriously injured on his leg. He was very lucky to even make it alive. But, when they took x-rays at the hospital and the doctors talked about it, they found out he wouldn’t be able to play basketball again. When he found out he won’t be playing basketball again, he was very devastated. He cried his eyes out.

A month later, he went to a rehab after his injuries were healed. He went to be able to walk again. They said it was possible, but he had to seriously try really hard. He then of course never gave up. But, when they gave him therapy, he still wasn’t able to walk. But, still never gave up. But then one day, he went back to the rehab and decided to try again. He got off his crutches, started hopping a little bit then tried walking and he did it! All the therapy workers were so happy for him but he wasn’t happy himself because he still couldn’t play basketball.

Months have passed after he just started walking and he decided to take his talents back to the gym. He arrived at the gym, put on his shoes, and started to think. He thought about how his career was over, but he didn’t want to believe it so he kept trying. So, he started shooting around, nut he wasn’t able to do a lay up or a dunk anymore because of his injuries. So he decided to become a sharp shooter. Then one day he took his talents back to the Division I league.

This league had many NBA scouts because it had many great players. In the first few games he made many of his shots and barely missed. Then, towards the end, he got even better and would shoot 50% from behind the 3 point line, and 50% inside the 3 point line. These percentages caught the NBA scout’s eyes. This also even stunned the audience eyes because they knew his story. Then as the league ended, the scouts asked him to join the NBA.

He was very surprised and was so happy. But, he thought he would never be good enough. He was told by everyone around him that he was good enough, but he still couldn’t believe it. They then asked the audience. They said it was no question. So then he finally agreed to join the NBA.

Then, a year later he was draft pick 10 in the first round to the Los Angeles Lakers. He was glad he made it this far even with his injury. And when he gave his speech he said, “ I’m so happy to be here, but everyone should always remember to never give up.” This is about the man who never gave up and achieved his goal.
