Naughty Felix - Part 2
Born 1986, M, from Nairobi, KenyaThe following morning he woke up very early, oblivious of what was happening, his mother woke up when Felly suddenly pulled up one of her eyelids open and asked, “Mama are you in there?” she lacked words to say but gave him a light spank on the back. This did not go well with him. He suddenly left the room crying, “I am going to die… mmmhh...”
“Go kill yourself if you want boy?” retorted mother as she went back to sleep knowing very well the boy knew nothing about death.
Before she could catch enough sleep again, she was flabbergasted when she heard the boy cry, “Mama! Mama!”
Shaken and taken aback, she together with her husband jumped up and ran to him. They found him at the sitting room by the window up on a step-stool. Looking out the window he yelled, “Look mama! Daddy, the mountains are up!” There was a lot of smog that morning and you couldn’t see the mountains so he thought they went up and down like an elevator. Father and mother turned to one another and looked at themselves before father finally commented, “This boy is crazy. He scared me stiff.” He gave his wife a tap on the shoulder.
“He is our son. Maybe that’s how you behaved when young. Ha-ha,” she laughed off.
That day they had planned to go to visit Felix’s grandparents as it were Saturday. The preparation then began in earnest. Ms Gabriel was busy preparing a palatable breakfast as Gabriel perused the newspaper. She left the kitchen to go for some eggs for baking a cake. After informing her husband, she headed for the adjacent shops.
Felix was by then busy changing from scribbling on his book to driving his toy car on the floor. He suddenly disappeared from his father’s view into the kitchen. Out of the blues, Gabriel had an alarming ear-piercing scream followed by noise from utensils. Alarmed, he shot up like bat from hell to the kitchen. What he saw made beads of sweat trickle down his forehead as fear ran its icy hand up and down his spine. There awkwardly lay Felix, not crying, not laughing and not talking. He was fully speechless. The kitchen utensils were scattered everywhere on the floor as the electric heater which his mother was using to warm bathing water was already glowing.
He quickly rushed to the boy and took him up, switched off the electric socket and asked whether the boy was alright. Still, he couldn’t utter a single word. The boy had put his hand in the jug the water was being boiled in by the electric heater. He received an electric shock that sent him to the sink where the plates were. Felix spoke something which was unclear but kept pointing at his right arm. He had a little bruise on his arm.
They quickly rushed him to hospital where after the doctor dressed his wound told them he would be okay. They left back for home. One thing was certainly sure, Felix will never be seen anywhere near that heater. Breakfast was soon set and the tables were laid. As they engrossed themselves in eating, Felix bit his jaw. He began to scream; his mom reached out to him and asked “What happened to you Felly?”
“I just ate my face,” answered the boy as he shed tears of sorrow.
The day must have begun so badly on his side that day. He kept crying and had no joy at all. After taking breakfast, he headed to his bed and went to slumber. At least this made his parents take a breath of relief for some time. However, the journey to the grandparents had to be postponed.
When he finally woke up, he found his parents already taking lunch. He was much fresh and composed. He walked to his father and sat beside him.
“Daddy I had a dream,” he finally said after a short silence.
“Wow! What son? Was it a sweet dream?” inquired mother.
“Go on tell us. What did you dream about son?” encouraged father.
“I saw fire coming out of our house. I shouted, "Fire! Fire!" but there was nobody to hear my shouts. I tried to get into the house and rescued my potty. You used water to kill all the fire. But daddy my toy car, it was burnt. Daddy will you buy me another one?”
“Of course yes. But son, have you checked and not found your car?” responded father looking at the boy directly in the eyes.
“Wow! What a good dream!” admired mother, “you know Felly, you are such a courageous boy. You mean you entered into the fire without fearing and saved your potty?” the boy shook his head in agreement. “Then I now know you can never let anything bad happen to us.”
“That’s my son. Give me five! I now know you can be a life saver,” said daddy.
“Who is a life saver daddy?” asked the boy curiously.
“This is a person who saves other people’s lives…”
“Are they Jesus?” asked the curious boy with a wondering expression written all over his face. According to their teacher, only Jesus saves and no one else can do it. That’s what he too knows at least by then.
“No, not Jesus, but you see, they are like Jesus because they help people who are trapped in a collapsed building or fire just like you did to your potty.”
“Yes! I will be a life savor,” shouted the boy as he jumped up and down towards the kitchen for a drink. Suddenly his attention was drawn to the lunch hour music on the local radio station. He stopped, stood listening intently, and smiled as if he'd just had an enormous stroke of luck.
"Mommy," he asked, "what is this song singing?" She then repeated the lines that had just played.
"No," he said, "the part with earth," he quickly demanded.
"Oh, 'Heaven Is a Place on Earth.' That's the name of the song." Replied mother not sure what was so interesting about the lines the boy wanted to know. His face fell. "Ohhh," he said, and turned to walk away.
"What did you think it was saying?" his mother asked him.
"I thought it said 'Felix has a place on earth.'” he said disappointedly as he walked away.
“Felly,” called his daddy, “come hear,” he said in a seductive voice. He held his hands and told him that he surely had the earth although the singer didn’t mean Felix but meant heaven. He explained to him that ‘heaven on earth’ is just used to mean good things found on earth since heaven is a good place where everything we need is found. So if he became a good boy and worked harder, he would have heaven on earth.
Later that evening, Felix and his mother left for the shops. They were in the car and Felly was in the back eating a mini box of candy. All of a sudden, he burst, "I have a chocolate stuck up in my nose!!" He kept sneezing and sneezing. He was eating some chocolates and he decided to take one and shove it up his nostril! His mother got scared stiff and suddenly pulled up by the roadside. She took an ear bud to help clear his nose. She tried to suction it out of his nose, since he wouldn't blow it for her. Well all of a sudden he sighed, "It's gone, it feels better now,"...he must have swallowed it or it melted!
“Ooof! Crazy kids!” she exclaimed as she ignited the engine.
After making better rounds within the supermarket, they settled at the meat market. It was a very small one and was packed with people waiting to be served. So they queued but Felix walked on. It was finally her turn to order the meat she wanted. In the corner of her eye, she noticed little Felix was staring at an exceptionally tall man next to her. She tried to get his attention to give him a stern look for staring but had to pay attention to what she was buying.
As soon as she could, she looked back at Felly; he was slowly moving his eyes up the man. When he reached his arm, he fell over backwards. His eyes never left his arm nor did he cry just lay there staring. The man was wearing a short sleeved shirt and was missing an arm. Felix then stood right next to him and bent his body so he could look up the empty sleeve. From across the room he shouted, "Mommy, his arm! Gone!" the mother was horrified at his manners, but before she could scold him and help him up, the market filled with laughter. It seemed everyone was being entertained by that. Fortunately, even the tall man laughed and explained what had happened to him.
