Hide and Seek
Born 2004, F, from Darien CT, United StatesShe wasn't found. Indigo Mason disappeared while she was playing hide and seek. We all searched the entire house, we called out, the police even searched. The police found no trace of her. Indigo was missing. The newspaper wrote thousands of articles on her, she was on the news. There was a world wide search for her. Everyone was talking about her in the supermarket, at school. They all talk about my sister like she is, well, like she's a subject. "The Indigo Mason Case" is what all people call it. Then one day, two years later, Indigo came back. There was pandemonium. News reporters question her, asking her what happened. She told them everything seems hazy, she says she can't remember. But she told me. She told me the real story. She wrote it down, slipped it under my door and told me never to tell anyone, but I'm telling you. These are her exact words. This is the truth and nothing but the truth.
"I was playing hide and seek, with you, Gracie, Marissa and Haylee. Remember? Well you were counting. Haylee and Marissa asked if I wanted to hide with them. I said no. They are bad hiders. I went to the gap between the dresser and the wall in our closet. I had been sitting there for a while. Then I heard footsteps. I assumed it was you or Marissa or Haylee. I heard a perfect imitation of your voice. It said "Found you". I was a bit confused because you couldn't see me, but we have a policy that if someone says they found you, you have to come out. So I did. And then there was a sweet smelling towel over my face. Then it all goes black.
I woke up in a dark room. I was chained to a chair. I felt awful. It was a while until my eyes adjusted to the light. I was in a room like a prison cell. Four hours later, I could tell this because of the clock on the wall, a girl comes in. I can't see her. She unties me. I ran to the door, I wanted to get home back to you and Mom and Dad and Jason. But the door was padlocked. I started to go into despair. The girl laughed and then left. There was a window in the cell. A little light came in. I saw that another person is in the room. It was a boy. I remembered seeing him on the news a few years ago. Remember William Balke, Sammie? Anyway he was on the news like five years ago, when he was ten. The pictures were different on the news. He looked like a happy boy, now he looked gaunt and hollow. Would I look like that? I already knew that I wouldn't get out, I had tried 101 ways to get out in those four hours. Will hadn't said anything during those attempts. But he talked now. We talked and talked all day for all those two years I was trapped.
I hated my life, but I didn't despair, Willie said he might know a way out. I trusted him because he'd been there for five years. Then something terrible happened. The woman, I now know who she is and what she looks like, I can't tell you who she is because that is a danger for you. She has red hair and chocolate eyes. Very pale skin. Anyway the woman came in. there was a huge machine in the corner. I had never really thought of it before, but the woman walked over to it. She turned a knob. There was a hissing noise and the woman put a gas mask on. I panicked, it looked like she was panicked too because she ran so fast that she forgot to close the door. I ran to the door, then I turned back to Willie. He was dead. The machine, the machine pumped poisonous gas. I didn't want to leave him but I had no choice. I ran. I was outside. I didn't look at the building I had been trapped in. Even if I had, it wouldn't have made much difference because it was night. I could run surprisingly well even though I had been cooped up for two years. I reached our house and knocked on the door. You know the rest Sammie. This is where my story ends. There were a few more details that happened during the two years. You do not not really need to know these."
I knew I shouldn't have told anyone about the note Indigo wrote. The thing is that ever since she returned, Indigo has been in a daze. She wanders around like a zombie. Her first day back to school was a disaster. A bunch of reporters showed up, when one held a microphone up to her, Indigo screamed and ran away. My parents home school her now. I took the note to the police. The news reporters happened to be there. I told the police because they made me tell them right there and then. With the news people there. Then one looks at me. She has red hair and chocolate eyes. Then I understood. Indigo was trying to protect me when she told me not to tell anyone, not protecting herself. I was next.
