They thought it was Magic.
Born 1951, M, from Wilmington NC, United StatesThe Mirror Master looked down, once again. The handiwork was good. It was probably done by a HiTeK, or maybe even a BitMaster. The surface flowed with that silver soft "under the moon on the open ocean" shivering light that all good Mirrors had. Not quite silver, not quite mercury, not quite still, but not moving either. It was a good piece of work.
Looks could be deceiving though. It was his job as a Mirror Master to both find out if it worked, and what era it was from. Already the Mirror Master knew it was an older piece- for it had been centuries since anyone adorned a mirror with anything other than a circular, or square frame. In much the same way that a deep porcelain bowl can give the impression of endless beauty as it draws the gaze into yet deeper and deeper groves of pure perfection.
The Mirror Master knew it was simply the sublime after affect of seeing actual symmetry exposed. Pure symmetry that is, a symmetry that extended from the false sense of time passing, to the present moment. It was, in fact, the very principal behind how the Mirrors worked. For if you look at anything the correct way, and from the right angle (The Mirror Master loved that Pun- and many a smile had been plastered on his face when groans accompanied it) you can see all that there is, at the same time. Even if it is not the same place.
Using his own Mirror, one made by a great Mirror Master- maybe the greatest of all time, he looked at the mirror brought in by a student Dataplot. Dataplots often found things like this buried in the deep mounds of the Old Qbit Streams. Those first entangled mounds of QCD packets with their primitive carrying packets of pure light quanta. Flashes the kids called them nowadays. The Dataplot had found it while searching a back stream pile in a StringBane. She didn’t recognize it, neither did any of the Stringrakers. So she brought it to the Mirror Master.
He told her that it was old, but that it wouldn’t be worth much. It would make a nice curiosity to show at one of the Sparkles that the young ones like to go to. The young Professionals seem to glory in taking on a bit of the electromagnetic spectrum and then adjusting a bit of matter to have selective eye receptors. They claimed that everyone sparkled if you did that. Any object you were holding sent out frozen flashes of quickly fading lightsicles. Use a Mirror, well, that looked like a bubbling fountain in dimensions smaller than a proton, but flowing into Universe size, before becoming a mere husk of foam floating back on the edge of one reality or another.
He told the Dataplot to come back later and he would give it back. That was before he used his own Mirror.
He put the Dataplot’s find next to his finely crafted Mirror. Then, as only Mirror Masters could, he opened the Mirror. Instantly all of what was, and was not, narrowed to the now. It wasn’t a place as much as it was a feeling of a place. Like there was a point there, but pointless. It took years to learn how to be and un-be- while in a Mirror. There isn’t any Time, for it doesn’t exist. There isn’t any location, because space is an illusion. Mirror Masters follow realities that were, or might, or could, or should have - been.
It was from that place, in the Mirror crafted by a Master from long ago, that he saw that the Mirror was even older than he thought. So he stepped into it. Moments later he stepped out. Bewildered, laughing, and shaken to the core. He lifted the much smaller crafted mirror, and understood now, why it did not have a plane frame. He wondered what Mirror Master might have made it. It was, perhaps, the oldest known Mirror in existence. Since he was in the Mirror when he discovered that, everyone knew. The Dataplot became the most famous person alive, and was promoted to MiningMaster on the spot.
A brief report was sent out to all the Mirror Masters. Some worlds preferred a physical symmetry and a real time existence, so they “read “ the report. Here it is, just as the Mirror Master sent it out:
Item: Quantum complexity unveiling that all events are both simulations, and simultaneous, giving certain aspects of probability substance, at least for a time in TIME- known as Mirrors to us, has revealed what may have been one of the first Mirrors ever made.
Item: The Mirror was dated back to a time when people (called: Humans in that era) did not realize that nothing in Nature is Linear, and that nothing is real, except to the reality that is accepted. These “Humans” still thought of things as animate and inanimate even though they knew that both were made of the same substances. They also thought they were individuals - instead of recognizing they were just infused with individuality. Apparently they did not know why “duality” is indivisible.
Item: Even thought the Mirror is spoken of under different names through out the History of these Humans: Prophets, Seers, Revelator, God, Druids, Shamans, Tripping, Looking Glasses, Witching Bowls, Scrying Glasses, Oracles, the names of the Mirror, and the People who could see into them poured into everyone of their Civilizations.
Item: They thought being able to look into a mirror, seeing the future, or the past, or what could, should, might, or will happen- was Magic.
Item: The oldest chant we found in this Mirror from the “Humans” went like this:
“Mirror, Mirror, On the Wall, Who is Fairest of them all?”
When we asked the Humans how they knew to ask the Mirror anything at all- they said:
“Just ask. It is a Magic Mirror. It cannot lie.”
Item: We found that Humans thought Magic was anything they didn’t understand.
Conclusion: It was a Magic Mirror. It hung on a wall. And the Humans thought it was a Fairy Tale.
