James and his family’s farm was just outside the city and it was about a 7 min drive. The farm was in the countryside and it was usually very hot.
It was a hazy day on a farm in the state of Oklahoma. A boy named James, his sister, Hannah, and their parents lived on a poor farm and raised all sorts of animals including cows, chickens, roosters, and horses.
One day in August James realized that there wasn’t really much to do on the farm and no one to play with except his sister, because his father was always busy taking care of the animals and his mother was busy buying groceries and preparing food for the children.
Once James realized this, he went to his parents saying that he was bored. “Mother, Father, there isn’t anything for me to do or have on the farm.”
“Son, we need to work on the farm. It’s important that we all do our part working to get things done. We need the eggs and milk from our animals. This is how we make a living, how we pay our bills, and we just have to deal with it,” said the father.
James sighs, “I understand.”
At night, James’ parents’ discussed James’ feelings and they wanted to do the best for their son, so they tried to come up with a solution. They thought maybe they could show their children around the city or something like that. They also thought they could bring the kids to an amusement park. The next morning at breakfast James was still feeling grumpy as he sat down for breakfast. His parents asked their children if they wanted to go on a trip to the pet shop in the town.
“Really?!” The children replied eagerly.
“Yes. We also thought it was a little bit lonely here, so we decided that we could get a pet, but it has to be under $80., okay?”
“Yes,” the children screamed.
James and his family got in their truck and took a short drive to the town but they were really low on gas. Father said it would be enough. They arrived and got off at “Peter’s Pet Home.” James was so excited to see the animals in there, because he was familiar with them, he lived on a farm. The pet shop was noisy because of all of the animal’s sounds coming from the inside. He then entered and looked around in amusement.
”Wow!” James said as he walked around staring at all of the animals. Out of all the animals there was one he wouldn’t take his eyes off. It was the cutest thing he had ever seen, a Golden Retriever puppy. He immediately went to his parents asking them if he could have it. His parents looked at the price tag and shook their head.
“It’s too expensive, we can’t afford it,” said James’s parents. James couldn’t believe it, he just couldn’t believe they just said no. How could such a small animal cost $124.99? James was the saddest person standing up. He slowly started to whimper. Then he started to cry, as he walked sluggishly back to the truck. He crawled in the back and his parents started the car. His parents felt bad for not being able to buy the dog for James. They were sure his little sister would have liked it as well.
That night James went to bed crying and without talking to his parents. The next day, James sought some ways to get money for the dog and he knew the chores wouldn’t be easy. First he did the dishes for his mum, then he washed the truck and fed the animals with his dad. But so far there wasn’t nearly enough money. James finally went to bed after a tiring day.
“Bark! (whimper)” Something small had just crawled on James and he didn’t know what it was. He tried to open his eyes but it was hard to see because of the light. Once his vision came back he was almost sure this was a dream, there it was, the puppy, whimpering because it was cold. He almost jumped out of bed! He took the puppy in his arms and ran downstairs fast but carefully.
When he got downstairs he exclaimed, ”how did you get him, or her!”
“Your mother and I decided together that you and your sister needed to do something, we thought if we cut out a little bit of money and eat a little cheaper we could afford it.”
“Thank You!” (James goes and hugs his parents)
“Come on boy!” James and his new dog ran outside and played ball together until it was time for dinner.
