Sweet dreams
Born 1953, F, from Auckland, New Zealand![Sweet dreams](/storage/story/4016D8DC-DCE6-FFCD-82E0-BB6E61C5ECD6_1683772567-image(205x285-crop).jpeg)
A trip to Queenstown became more exciting when I looked into a shop window and saw my dream coat. A dark red coat with toogle pockets, donning a real fur collar made from New Zealand possum.
I’m fine with just walking past and looking at it.
But today that red dream coat was on special at half the original price. It didn’t have a price tag so I just stood on the outside looking in and wondering if I could afford such a beautiful coat.
The lady in the store came and opened the door to me, saying it's cold outside. Come on in and stay warm. It was a cold morning and looking very much like it could snow.
I stepped in. It was into another world. Art on the walls were generously priced at $20,000 plus as were the handbags and other pieces of exquisite nature.
I walked over to the coat. The well groomed lady stood behind me explaining the quality of their garments. The products that they were made of. Letting me know in her upper class voice that the garments were a one off piece.
Each item a one off piece and I will never find another piece like it. This coat will last you a life time. The quality is exceptional.
Would you like to try it on she asked.
To which I replied, What’s the price. Should I find a seat before she answers I’m thinking.
“Oh dear, this coat is half price today, it’s only $2500.“
Gulp from me.
I answer. “no, I could never afford that”
I immediately moved to another part of the store and looked at their beautiful cardigans. Handmade with landscapes across the fronts of them.
$999 the lady shouted from behind the counter that she had retreated to after finding out I was just a commoner.
The buttons on the cardigans were uniquely designed. Perfectly round and each one different.
I wondered if I may be able to afford a button. Then from out of nowhere the lady appeared behind me.
Handed me the company business card and announced.
Sweets dreams lady, and at that I was ushered out the door into the cold to dream my dreams.

08/15/2023You beautifully captured the enchanting atmosphere of Queenstown in your short story. The way you described the allure of the red dream coat and its special price, along with the unexpected encounter with the elegant shop and its exquisite products, drew me into the scene. Your storytelling skillfully conveyed the sense of longing and wonder. Well done!

05/26/2023Oh, Gail. This is histerical! I saw a short piece in the NY Times where the writer describes buying jeans in a Manhattan shop. She tried on one pair and said, "they're too tight." The sales hungry salesman said, "They'll expand." She tried on another and said, "They're too big." The sales guy says, "They'll shrink."
Sherman Alexie is right, "There's a good story in everything.' Your story and the other helps to show he's right.
Happy storystar week. jg

05/13/2023Gail, thank you for sharing this. Loved the humorous part about possibly affording a button. I think a lot of us have felt that way before. Sorry she was snobby! I hope that one day you find a beautiful coat that you love to wear. :)
Great story!

05/19/2023Thanks Marla,
I didn’t mind and had a good laugh. I would never spend that much on myself. I’d rather give it to charity. Thanks. :-)

05/11/2023I loved this, Gail. We all have that one thing we would love to have but can't afford! My brother would say it was sad, but I think we all need something to aspire to! It was a great read!

05/10/2023I bet u would look like a million bucks in that coat, Gail. But even if u had the money to spend lavishly, it would not have felt good to provide a sales commission to such a nasty snobby little witch as the girl who 'helped' u. I'm sorry that she was so rude to you. I hope the coat never sells and they end up donating it to a thrift shop where it goes for 50 bucks! : )

05/10/2023Oh , such a great answer JD. I think the lady saw the funny side to me asking what a button would cost.
I had a good laugh. The thing is I would never pay that for any item and would much rather buy it at a thrift shop so that the donation went to a good cause.
Had a great time in Queenstown and missed the snow by one day.
Xx. :-) Thanks so much xx:-)
