Case 6 - The Beauty Pageant
Born 1983, M, from Atlanta,Texas, United StatesInspector J.P. Bullet, Rebella Howard, Harvey Lucas, Antonio Perez and Detective Tina Cassidy were having a meeting with Captain Graves. The Greater New York Arts and Entertainment Association were hosting a beauty pageant. The winner would receive $20,000 and the first and second runner up would receive $5,000 each. The chairperson was concerned that Alister Crane might try to heist the cash prizes.
After the meeting was over, J.P. and the others met in the detective’s office. “Rebella, you and Tina will be going undercover as contestants. I, Harvey and you will be backstage. Antonio, you will be outside watching the parking lot with the reserves. If anything looks funky, I want you and the reserves to move in,” said J.P.
Alister Crane was changing his hair color from gray to brown. “What is your plan sir,” asked Mr. Smalley. “I have fool proof plan Mr. Smalley, I am going to watch and see who wins and then my men will abduct the winner and then I will not only get the prize money but also ransom money,” said Alister with an evil laugh.
It was Friday evening. Alister paid the admission fee and went into the building. Because Alister had changed his hair coloring no one recognized him. Martha Sanchez, the chairperson for The Greater New York Arts and Entertainment Association was welcoming guests to the event. Martha shook Alister’s hand as he passed by and introduced herself as the chairperson. “I am a strong believer in art and entertainment and I would like to make a donation,” said Alister reaching into his pocket. He pulled out ten one hundred dollar bills and handed them to Martha. “What is your name sir, so I can recognize you for your contributions?” asked Martha. “Please, just consider it an anonymous donation,” said Alister. He went and took a seat.
The announcer took the stage. “Good evening ladies and gentlemen and welcome to tonight’s beauty pageant hosted by the Greater New York Arts and Entertainment Association. One of these 10 lucky young ladies is going to leave here with 20,000 dollars!” said the announcer. Everyone started clapping. “Our first theme this evening is evening gowns. There will be 5 that will be eliminated from this round of the competition. Let’s meet our contestants. Our first contestant is Miss Bethany Grover,” said the announcer. The crowd clapped as she walked across the stage, smiling at the judges. “Our second contestant is Miss Jennifer Skittles,” said the announcer. Jennifer walked across the stage smiling and stood beside Bethany. “Our third lucky lady is Miss Tina Cassidy,” said the announcer. Tina walked across the stage smiling, joining the other two contestants. “I don’t like the looks of this,” thought Alister to himself. “Our fourth contestant is Miss Rebella Howard. Rebella stepped out on stage. As she started across the stage she started having flashbacks from her past and started trembling. “I-I can’t do it!” cried Rebella who ran off the stage. The announcer was surprised at Rebella’s reaction. “Ladies and Gentleman it looks like our fourth contestant had a little stage fright. Let’s meet contestant number five, Miss Angela Tatum. Angela walked across stage and joined the other three contestants. “Our sixth contestant is Bridgett Cross,” said the announcer. Bridgett walked across the stage and took her spot. “Contestant number seven is Miss Aloha Maui. Aloha walked across the stage and joined the others. “Contestant Number eight is Miss Cassaday Bridges,” said the Announcer. Cassaday joined the other seven on stage. “Contestant number nine is Melissa Noble,”said the announcer. Melissa took her spot. “Our tenth and final contestant is Sarah Barnhill. Sarah walked across the stage and joined the others. “All right judges, it is time for you to vote for the 5 lucky ladies that will move onto the next round of the competition.
Rebella was sitting backstage crying when Harvey came up. “I am sorry, Harvey, I could not do it,” cried Rebella. “It is okay, do you want to talk about it?” asked Harvey sitting down beside her. “Before I became a police officer, I was doing theft jobs for Brandon. One of the jobs was to loot a beauty pageant. Brandon’s henchmen were apprehended and I escaped and when nobody was looking I took the grand prize. I was trying to cross the state line when they caught me. It turned out if I had not tried to cheat to get the grand prize for Brandon I would have won,” said Rebella. Harvey sat there with Rebella, trying to console her.
“The 5 lucky ladies that will go to the next round are: Ms. Cassaday Bridges; Ms. Bridgett Cross; Ms. Bethany Grover; Ms. Tina Cassidy; and Ms. Sarah Barnhill,” said the Announcer.
“The next theme is swimwear. In this round two people will be eliminated,” said the announcer. Cassaday, Bridgett, Bethany, Tina and Sarah walked across the stage in swimwear and smiled at the judges and the audience as they took their places. “Judges please vote for the three contestants that will advance to the final round,” said the announcer. The judges voted and handed the results to the announcer. “The three lucky ladies going to the next round is Ms. Tina Cassidy; Ms. Cassaday Bridges; and Ms. Sarah Barnhill.
“The final theme is song. One of you will walk away with 20,000 dollars and the other two will walk away with 5,000 dollars!” said the announcer. The announcer told the contestants that each one would be given a song and the lyrics would be on the teleprompter. Tina was selected to go first. She was very nervous. “The song you will sing is One Way Ticket by Lee Ann Rhimes” said the announcer. Tina cleared her throat. “Standing on the border, looking out into the unknown,” sang Tina as she put her fingers together and put it up to her eye, like she was looking through a telescope. “I can feel my heart beating faster as I step out on my own. “There’s a new horizon” Tina pointed towards the backstage as she got into the song, “and the promise of favorable wind. I'm heading out tonight, traveling light. I'm gonna start all over again. And buy a one-way ticket on a west bound train. See how far I can go. I'm gonna go out dancing in the pouring rain. And talk to someone I don't know. I will face the world around me. Knowing that I'm strong enough to let you go. And I will fall in love again, because I can.” Through the entire song, Tina put all she had into it with dance. She was able to look away from the teleprompter and look at the judges and the audience when she sang. When she finished the song everybody in the room including the other contestants started clapping. The other two contestants performed their songs. “Judges, it is time for you to vote,” said the announcer. The judges made their decision and handed it back to the announcer. “The winner of tonight’s contest is Ms. Tina Cassidy,” said the announcer.
Alister pulled out his phone and called the henchmen. “Abort the mission,” and get out of here,” he said quietly. The henchmen started up their vehicle. Antonio saw them fixing to leave. He started up his truck and got on his ht. “Move in,” said Antonio. He blocked the van so they could not leave and the reserves converged on the van. The subjects in the van were arrested and transported to jail.
Martha Sanchez brought the crown and put it on Tina’s head. “I don’t deserve this. I had a lot of fun this evening, but there is someone more talented in looks and beauty than I am. After all I am just a poor girl from the Bronx and being dressed up is not the most important thing to me. Because in a little bit I am going to take this makeup off and fix my hair the way it was before the pageant and I will be the same Tina Cassidy, the poor girl from the Bronx. The person that should be wearing the crown is Ms. Rebella Howard.” Tina motioned Rebella to come out on the stage. She put the crown on Rebella’s head and hugged her. “Congratulations, you are the winner,” said Tina. Tears came to Rebella’s eyes.
Monday morning at the 169th Precinct Tina, Harvey and Rebella were talking about what happened on Friday night. J.P. walked into the room and poured a cup of coffee. “Between the gowns, swimwear, and the song, which one of my performances did you like the most?” asked Tina. He kissed her on the cheek. “I liked all three,” said J.P. He quickly exited the room. “He liked seeing you in a bikini,” teased Harvey. Then he turned to Rebella. “You know, I would have liked to have seen you in one too,” joked Harvey. “Shut up, Harvey!’ said Rebella. Tina started laughing. “I guess now it is time to find out what my punishment is,” said Rebella. She left the room. Tina and Harvey were puzzled at what she was talking about.
Rebella walked into the detective’s office. J.P. was writing up a report. “I am ready to accept my punishment for not completing the assignment,” said Rebella. “What are you talking about?” asked J.P. “I did not do my assignment, so I know I am either getting suspended or a letter of reprimand,” said Rebella. She was hoping for the best but prepared for the worse. J.P. reached across the desk and picked up a file folder. He handed the folder to Rebella. “What’s this?” asked Rebella. “Read it,” said J.P. Rebella opened the file folder and started reading it. “This is my latest evaluation report, but I don’t understand. It says in the comment section that I am an asset to the Special Investigation Division and continue to show maturity which I, Inspector Bullet, believe will help make inspector Howard an outstanding leader in the field,” said Rebella. “I think your ex-husband saw potential in you but he looked on the outside rather than what was on the inside. What he saw was a pretty face and was trying to force someone to change rather than taking them by the hand and leading them one step at a time. You took the steps to change your life around, but when you needed someone to take your hand and guide you they were not there and it left you having to learn and mature on your own. There are going to be times that you will encounter something that will make you think of the past and it will cause panic, fear, and anxiety. But one day you will mature to the point it no longer bothers you,” said J.P. “Thanks,” said Rebella shaking J.P.’s hand. She got up and started to walk out the door. She opened the door and then stopped. “You know, if Tina was not your girlfriend, I would give you a big hug,” said Rebella. “Tina is not my girlfriend,” said J.P. “Yeah Right,” said Rebella. “Get out of here before I change my mind about suspending you!” said J.P. in a joking manner.
