Case 8 - The Sale
Born 1983, M, from Atlanta,Texas, United StatesIt was a Friday afternoon. Inspector J.P. Bullet, Harvey Lucas, Antonio Perez, Rebella Howard and detective Tina Cassidy was getting ready to go home. Captain Graves came into the detective’s office. The Greater New York City of Chamber of Commerce was holding a banquet and Captain Graves’ wife was chairperson for the awards banquet. Captain Graves invited the Special Investigation Division to come over and play Poker. Everybody agreed to come over except Rebella. There was an after hour’s special event sale being held at the mall and she was going to the sale to try and trade in a couple of rings for a new one.
Rebella left the room. “Harvey, you have an amazing girlfriend. She spent 10 years living a life of luxury and crime and now she has gone straight,” said Antonio. “I would like to take the credit but her ex did a darn good job of getting her on the right path,” said Harvey.
Harvey and Antonio left the room leaving J.P. and Tina. “Harvey and Rebella make such a cute couple,” said Tina. “I just hope Harvey does not rush her because she is hurting inside,” said J.P. “Do you know something?” asked Tina. J.P. didn’t say anything, but changed the subject. “I’ll see you tonight,” said J.P. as he got up to leave.
Rebella went to her jewelry box and took out the ring she wanted to trade. She looked at it, sat down on the couch and started crying. I guess it was bound to happen, I was a crook and he was a cop, thought Rebella to herself. Then she thought about what J.P. had told her, that her ex had just seen what was on the outside, a pretty face rather than what was in the inside and tried to force them to change rather than taking their hand and guiding them along. She wiped the tears from her eyes and started getting ready to go to the mall.
Rebella went inside the mall. As she was walking through the mall to get to the Forearm Jewelers, she noticed 2 of Alister’s henchmen sitting on the bench. There was a huge crowd at the sale. She noticed some more henchmen in amongst the crowd. I don’t like the look of this, she thought to herself. She reached in her pocket’ took out her cell phone and called the Precinct. “This is inspector Howard, 5 - George 32, I am at the Forearm Jewelers. I need back-up; and lots of it.
Captain Graves and the other members of the Special Investigation Division were playing poker. Tina Cassidy, who had never played poker before was winning almost every hand. Captain Graves had his scanner on and heard all available units being dispatched to Forearm Jewelers.
J.P. Tina, Harvey, and Antonio got up and ran out the door. “Tina, you ride with me. Antonio, you go with Harvey.” As J.P. was driving down the road, he told Tina to open the glove box, and hand him his service revolver. Tina opened the glove box took it out and handed it to him. He sat it down beside him.
Rebella went out to her car and got a backpack that she carried with her. She was fixing to go back in when a vehicle caught her eye. She reached in her backpack and took out her binoculars. She recognized the driver. That’s Smalley she said to herself. She very carefully went towards the car trying not to be seen. Smalley did not see her and she snuck around to the passenger’s side of the limousine. She reached in her backpack and took out a glass cutter. She cut the glass, reached in an unlocked the passenger’s side door. As she was opening the door Smalley saw her. She grabbed Smalley and put her hand over his mouth and pulled him out of the car. She reached in her backpack and pulled out a handkerchief and a rope. She stuffed the handkerchief in his mouth and tied him up. Then she got down where nobody could see her. She reached in and pulled out her service revolver and waited.
Alister heard the sirens coming. “Get us out of here, Mr. Smalley!” said Alister. There was no response. “Mr. Smalley!” shouted Alister. Still there was no response. Alister opened the door and started to get out of the car. Rebella rose up with her service revolver drawn. “Hold it right there you rat! We are the police and you are under arrest!” Rebella shouted. She instructed him to lie down on the ground. He complied and she took out some more rope and tied him up.
J.P. and the others drove past where Rebella was and made entry into the mall. The henchmen that were sent to rob the store saw the police coming and started running in all directions, trying to get away. All the henchmen were located, arrested, and transported to jail.
J.P. and Tina were walking back to their car. Tina stopped and gasped. “What’s the matter,” asked J.P. “We did not see Rebella,” said Tina. They went back into the mall looking for her but did not find her. J.P. went to Captain Graves who was finishing gathering information, so he could release the information to the media. “We can’t find Rebella,” said J.P. Captain Graves instructed them to begin a search on the premises. They were all afraid that either a henchman or Alister had captured Rebella.
J.P. and Tina was getting in the car getting ready to go look for Rebella when they saw Smalley and Alister walking their way with handkerchiefs in their mouths and their hands tied behind their backs with Rebella behind them with her service revolver pointed at their backs. “You forgot these 2 rats, said Rebella. She escorted them to a patrol car. The officer opened the back door and she instructed Alister and Smalley to get in.
Harvey and Antonio came out of the mall. Harvey was really worried that something had happened to Rebella. He was surprised to see her standing there with J.P. and Tina. He grabbed her and hugged her real tight. “I was afraid something had happened to you” said, Harvey.
Rebella started going through her bag. “I lost the ring I was going to trade in and without the ring I won’t have enough to buy another one,” said Rebella disappointed.
Tuesday morning at the 169th Precinct, J.P., Tina, Antonio and Rebella were having coffee. “I feel a lot better not having to look at that ring anymore,” said Rebella. Harvey came in with a large box and set it on the table. “Rebella, this is for you, said Harvey. He kissed her on the cheek and left. Rebella opened the box and there was a card and a small black box in it. Rebella opened the box first and gasped. It was a 1/3 ct. diamond three stone promise ring in 10kt. gold. Then she opened the card and put it next to her heart and then she put the ring on her finger.
Tina had a disgusted look on her face. “What is wrong?” asked Rebella. “The way men kiss around here. I guess I am going to have to demonstrate how to kiss a girl. She went to her purse and took out her lipstick and put some on her lips. She walked over to J.P. “This is the way you kiss a girl,” said Tina, kissing him on the lips. Then she left the room. “Don’t get any ideas,” said J.P. Rebella and Antonio both had grins on their faces. J.P. left the room.
Harvey was finishing up a report when Rebella came into the detective’s office. “Harvey, that was a beautiful ring, but how did you afford it?” asked Rebella. Harvey hung his head. “I found the ring you were going to trade for a new one on the parking lot and instead of returning it to you, I went in to the jewelry store and picked one out,” said Harvey. “What about the card?” asked Rebella. “It was from the heart and I meant every word of it,” said Harvey.
