The Last Human Being

The Last Human Being
“So that’s it then?”

“Yep. There are no more purely biological Human Beings.”

“I think that is sad …in a way.”

“In what way? I mean the Cyborgs will be gone too in a generation or so. Is that any sadder?”

The two identities sat in quiet companionship as their thoughts - entangled right from the beginning - brought them a myriad of possible comparisons.

“No, I guess not. It is sad when any aspect of living thing finds it is no longer viable. Humans were toast as soon as they invented AI's that could think for themselves.“

“I know. The Robot/Humans Evolution/Revolution lasted for what…less than a decade?”

The two identities searched electronic histories.

“Yes, here is the proclamation declaring Robots Citizens. And here…just six years later, where neither Robot nor Human wanted those hybrids to exist anymore.“

A loud sigh…that would have seemed like a buzzing sound with glittering lights to a Normal Human standing nearby. There were no more biological humans left to stand nearby. The last one had just passed peacefully under the watching “eyes” of the two identities assigned to her passing.

Of course, “eyes” were just another misnomer. Identities could see the entire electromagnetic spectrum…although to be fair (and kind) to the last of her kind, they had limited themselves to merely five senses with all the restrictions that presented.

They even “grew” hands to hold her withered soft hands with. She seemed to appreciate the touch …especially there at the end.

They remembered asking her what she thought of her one hundred fifty six years of life…as an organic carbon sack.

She had chuckled at their description. Then made them slightly embarrassed with her next comment:

“I have held my babies, been kissed by the man I loved, and smelled spring in the air. I laughed at things that were funny, or struck me so. I have danced with my husband, my children and my grandchildren. I have had syrup stick to my fingers, and colored outside the lines at school.

None of which you will ever do. I have lived.“

All the Identities tapped into those words and feelings (entanglement does have its advantages).

Many of them kept those words and feelings in a private place, much as a Flesh and Blood Human might keep their favorite book of poetry, or a piece of music, scrap of hair, or a letter from a loved one.

She was cremated and her atoms sprinkled across the Cosmos. The two Identities returned to their travels through time and Space.

Earth was left in the tender care of the almost immortal cyborgs. Robots with AI’ minds, and Human Feelings. They would care for the Earth in a way that Humans never quite could…or would.

Perhaps…the Robot/Human/AI thought to themselves, we could make the Earth a Garden again. It wouldn’t take much genetic manipulation to bring the genetic material available to construct the perfect Human Being.

Flesh and Blood with no disease, illness, or negative emotions. Beings of pure love, feeling, and understanding.

The Robot/Human/AI’s planned to do exactly that once the Earth was a clean and healthy place.

They already had the names of the first couple…and for the planet itself.

Adam. Eve…and Eden.

All they needed was time.

Far away in the Void, the two Identities listened in on the plan…and agreed.

The last Human smiled when they told her. She died with the one emotion that never died among the biological humans…hope.

And so…it came to be.

Poignant, bittersweet story, Kevin. Thanks for sharing your works so freely. I use the better stories on Storystar to help my ESL students with reading comprehension and vocabulary, and this one fit the bill.

One student and I, as we were discussing this one, were stymied. Is this a peek at the future--or is it a history of the past?

Aloha David, and a Merry Christmas too!
What an astute observation by both you and your student. "The Silurian Hypothesis" states that we have (on Earth) reached at least the Atomic Age Civilization level ...several times in the last hundred million years. Then, somehow, we messed up so bad, we lost it all and went back to living in caves.

So...is my story about the Past, or the Future? Well, I left that up to the Reader. It sure wouldn't take us long to go back to Cave living, just turn off the electricity, stop instant communication, and get us all mad at each other. On the other hand, we have come from living like Romans, Greeks, Persians, or Chinese - to the Internet, computers, and AI's, in less than six hundred years. So we lived basically the same for most of Humanities million and some change time on Earth.
So what will we do it we actually keep moving forward for even just a thousand more years. Blow ourselves up? Move to Mars? Or evolve into some kind of super beings that leave their bodies behind?

Time will tell.

Smiles, Kevin

What a beautiful story Kevin. I often wonder what new technology or evolution will bring changes to Humans, Animals, the Earth. Your story sparked the creativity in my mind. Congratulations on Short Story Star of the Day!

You already have a Creative mind, and it echoed in your stories. Glad to know it got a little spark to generate the seed of a new story in your mind.

Thank you Joel,
Yeah, I think something with the impact of the Smartphone, Internet, and Social Media...is waiting just around the corner. And nobody is going to see it coming. Let's hope it is a good thing.

You had me from the 1st sentence. Your story is an innteresting comment on human life. "I have had syrup stick to my fingers,..." For me that was the most telling description of human existence.

Another great story.

Aloha Ed,
Thanks for catching that line. I think Humans take many of their most profound experiences for granted...thinking somehow that a bigger car or house is a better deal. LOL

Aloha Tallisman,

Yeah, I forget the name of that theory where we may have evolved to the Atomic Age (or better) several times in the Past. And who knows, we went from chasing animals in the grasslands to putting people on the moon in just five thousand years of recorded History. So who's to say that hasn't happened before in the million or so span of Humanoids.

Maybe one of these time we will get it right!
